The Revs were the better team, and two other thoughts from Saturday.

For the third straight game, the New England Revolution let a lead slip away. This time, however, the final result, a 1-1 draw against D.C. United, didn't seem so bad. Here are a few thoughts from the game:

1. It’s about composure. Though it was unfortunate considering his history as an upstanding player, Chris Tierney was correctly shown a red card in the 52nd minute to reduce the Revolution to 10 men. Up a goal but down a man, the Revs needed to show poise if they were going to escape with a good result. Six minutes later, however, Lee Nguyen failed to show that poise as he was justly sent to the locker room early. From there, it seemed inevitable that the score line would switch in favor of D.C. United. The Revs were inspired though, getting big performances from Jermaine Jones, Andrew Farrell and others. In the end, the Revolution conceded a goal, but held on to keep a point. Not bad for a team that was steamrolled 4-2 midweek in an 11-on-11 game.

2. The goal was unfair to Farrell. After Saturday’s game, Farrell explained to media that he felt he needed to give a 180-minute performance in 90 minutes after missing the midweek game. Farrell certainly looked motivated against DC.. as he repeatedly made big-time plays. His one blemish unfortunately led to a goal as the Louisville product failed to deal with a Taylor Kemp cross. The ball zoomed through the Revolution box before being tapped home by Jairo Arrieta. Likely unaware of the Cost Rican’s presence, Farrell chose not to push Kemp’s offering out of bounds. In retrospect, he should have. Farrell needs to take some responsibility for the goal, but his otherwise flawless performance shouldn’t be forgotten.

3. The Revs were the better team. Speaking to media after the game, Jones said, "I’m 100% sure if we play 11-11 then we would win that game." It’s a standard message from a player that believes in his team. Still, he’s not wrong. The Revs controlled the game before the 52nd minute, preventing D.C. United from finding any type of rhythm. Even after going down to 9 men, the Revs performed well and nearly got goals from Teal Bunbury and Kelyn Rowe. At the end of the night, D.C. scored on their only shot on target, which allowed them to grab a point. D.C. are now atop the Eastern Conference, but the Revs played well enough to prove that they are among the league elite.

We evaluate all 14 players who appeared for the Revolution--including two who hit the showers early. Who deserves Man of the Match honors? Cast your vote.

After losing two men--Chris Tierney and Lee Nguyen--to early red cards, the Revolution battened down the hatches, turning in a strong defensive performance en route to a 1-1 draw. Following an unconventional, nine-on-11 match, who deserves Man of the Match honors? Vote below.

Rating Scale: 1.0 Goat → 10.0 Golden Boy

Starters

Bobby Shuttleworth - 5.75 (May Average: 6.38)

Nick - 5.5: Surprisingly quiet shift for the man between the pipes. Could have done nothing about the Jairo Arrieta goal; otherwise didn't have an opportunity to impact the match. Jake - 6: A stellar effort in front of him meant only the one shot on target but Bobby commanded his area well overall and, considering the task of salvaging the game with only 9 men, he did well.

Chris Tierney - 3.75 (May Average: 5)

Nick - 3.5: Moved up the flank with purpose and helped set up the Revs' lone goal with a well-placed corner. Unfortunately, his studs-up foul left his club shorthanded for nearly 45 minutes of play. I don't believe his challenge was malicious in intent, but it was reckless. Tough evening. Jake - 4: It's a tough red card to receive but more importantly for the Revs is Tierney's looming suspension. He's been so vital on set pieces and on the overlap down the left we'll see how the Revs cope without him.

Andrew Farrell - 8 (May Average: 7.13)

Nick - 8: Statement performance after receiving midweek rest. His defensive stats--4 tackles, 2 interceptions, 6 clearances, 1 blocked shot--don't tell the whole story, but they certainly help. Covered a tremendous amount of ground and rose to the occasion when his team needed him most. Gutsy shift. Jake - 8: I said it during the second half when the Revs were under siege, but Farrell is playing centerback at an All-Star caliber level right now. Such a vast improvement from the first games of the year.

Jose Goncalves - 7.25 (May Average: 6.19)

Nick - 7.5: Still have reservations about the Goncalves-Farrell CB pairing? Me either--they've come a long way. Much like Farrell, JoGo put together an impressive statistical night, contributing 6 clearances and 6 tackles. Highlighted the Revs' need for a strong defender in the air, using his physical frame to command the box (and keep Bobby upright and clean). Jake - 7: His aerial presence is so key for that backline and his partnership with Farrell continues to grow and mature as the season progresses. We can question the depth behind those two, but the starting defense is as good as any in the league.

London Woodberry - 6.25 (May Average: 6.45)

Nick - 6.5: Woodberry has developed into a Scott Caldwell-like figure of consistency. Responded to the double reds with poise, defending well 1v1 while earning 3 big tackles. Floated into no-man's land on the Arrieta goal, but by that point, the Revs' back line had entered survival mode. Strong performance. Jake - 6: Gave up a lot of room on his flank during the build up to the goal but aside from that he was he was the most affected defender when the reds starting coming out and he had to stay in his own half.

Scott Caldwell - 7.5 (May Average: 6.85)

Nick - 8: Scotty had his finger on the match from start to finish. Showed up virtually everywhere on the pitch, continually stalling the DC attack with aggressive, intelligent defending. Man of the Match candidate. Jake - 7: The reds also tempered Scotty's ability in the midfield just a bit but the overall effort was still there. With the offense losing a few key cogs next week, Caldwell will be one of the players tasked with picking up the slack, something the young midfielder has been more than capable of this season.

Jermaine Jones - 6.25 (May Average: 5)

Nick - 6.5: As expected, this club looks significantly more dynamic with JJ in the middle of the field. Flashed his attacking abilities by sending a near-flawless cross toward Charlie Davies early on, and used his physicality and strength over the ball (5 tackles) to wear down DC's attack. That said, his yellow card was foolish--and completely avoidable; hopefully the MLS DC gives him a pass. Jake - 6: Almost salvaged a win for the Revs with his marauding dribbles forward to earn a few corners late in the game but when the Revs needed composure the most he almost lost his. Dissenting with Mark Geiger in that manner down to 9 men already is not smart, nor were some of his passes deep in his own half.

Juan Agudelo - 6.25 (May Average: 6.3)

Nick - 6: Creative movement up top caused problems for DC's back line in the first half, and his powerful header set up Davies' right place, right time goal. Unfortunately, Agudelo had to depart midway through a promising evening, thanks to a defensive substitution (and a Chris Tierney red card). Jake - 6.5: Loved the defensive effort in particular down the right flank and it was a shame he had to be sacrificed to stabilize the backline right before the Nguyen red. Should keep him fresh for next week when he'll need to support likely replacement Kevin Alston at left back.

Lee Nguyen - 3 (May Average: 5.3)

Nick - 3: Devastating to receive such a poor mark after a strong performance, which included a handful of creative passes in the attacking third. But to pick up a foolish yellow--and a then recklessly earn a second, while already playing shorthanded, is inexcusable. Disappointing performance from a club leader. Jake - 3: We've seen Lee make a few ill-advised tackles from behind this year to draw yellow cards, but nothing close to the sheer lapse in judgment to go elbow first (and very late) into a needless midfield challenge. If there's something going on behind the scenes between Lee and the Revs, a suspension week would be a good time to clear the air.

Teal Bunbury - 6.75 (May Average: 6.4)

Nick - 6.5: Didn't turn in his best passing night (55.6%) and failed to complete a far-post run that would've resulted in an easy, tap-in finish. But for 89 minutes, Teal worked his tail off, fighting to keep possession with three aerial wins and a clever run at goal. Jake - 7: Another player who nearly stole three points for the Revs was Bunbury, who's hard work and clever play down the right earned several chances and set pieces for the Revs as they battled to stay in front in the second half.

Charlie Davies - 6.25 (May Average: 6.55)

Nick - 6: Davies' teammates struggled to involve the striker early on, but that didn't keep Chuck from making strong runs off the ball. His hard work was rewarded in the 45th minute, when he finished a spilled rebound to give the Revs a 1-0 advantage. Jake - 6.5: Right place at the right time for the goal, but I'd have taken Davies off for Alston instead of Agudelo if only for defense. Not that Charlie didn't do a bad job under the circumstances, just that Agudelo's more suited for the job.

Subs

Kevin Alston - 5.75 (May Average: 4.42)

Nick - 5.5: In an unexpected substitute appearance, Alston held his own, shutting down the left side of the field en route to a relatively pedestrian performance. Heaps will look for another clean showing if he calls Alston's name to replace Chris Tierney this weekend. Jake - 6: Alston's struggled his last few appearances at left back, but a good showing here probably gives him the nod to start at left back even if the Revs have to give up a lot on the offensive end.

Kelyn Rowe - 5.75 (May Average: 5.7)

Nick - 5.5: Wanted to play hero--and nab a shorthanded goal--but ultimately settled into the match, helping the Revs preserve a point. Great energy from the Starting XI hopeful...exactly what his club needed. Jake - 6: With Nguyen and Tierney both serving suspensions next week, Rowe will probably be tasked with pulling the strings in midfield AND delivering set pieces. Let's see if he can pull it off.

Sean Okoli - 6 (May Average: 6)

Nick - 6: Six minutes may not warrant a true player rating, but for the second time this season, Okoli entered late and took care of business. Earned a crucial corner to help his side waste the final moments of extra time. Jake - 6: A rare cameo but certainly added fresh legs and kept up Bunbury's intensity on the right flank.

In a match that saw nine cards handed out in total between DC and the Revs, Tierney's spiked the most controversial of reactions from fans and reporters alike.

In his post-game press conference, Jay Heaps described Saturday's 1-1 draw between the New England Revolution and D.C. United as a "pillow fight" up until the 52nd minute, but what happened after that has drawn a heavy mixture of ire and common sense.

The play that sparked everything occurred when D.C.'s Chris Pontius saw his in-swinging corner kick cleared back out towards the corner flag. Both he and veteran left-back ardently pursued the ball, with the former looking to whip in more service and the latter trying to clear the ball out of danger. However, things didn't quite go as planned for either.

Pontius barely got to the ball first and Tierney challenged with his studs exposed, coming down on the top of Pontius' knee. Without any hesitation, head referee Mark Geiger went straight to the back pocket and sent Tierney right off, reducing the Revs to 10 men.

Another red call would soon surface by way of a Lee Nguyen wayward elbow, but Tierney's has simultaneously sparked the most disdain and agreement. To get a sense of that, here's a look at some reactions that occurred in the heat of the moment.

The Revs battled their Eastern Conference foe to a solitary point, as another halftime lead slipped away and New England ended the match with nine men.

After enduring a 4-2 drubbing at the hands of Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night, the New England Revolution managed to secure a 1-1 draw with D.C. United on Saturday evening in what was a highly emotional contest.

In the match’s early-goings both teams struggled to assert themselves and take a hold on the proceedings, as the Revs were forced to patiently probe around DC’s narrow and disciplined defense.

Despite that, numerous half-chances fell the Revs way, as Lee Nguyen showed glimpses of his phenomenal vision that defined his 2014 campaign. On two different occasions, Nguyen darted centrally and feigned, only to then slip Juan Agudelo through DC’s tight lines. However, a combination of goalkeeper Bill Hamid and center-back Kofi Opare quelled any danger and kept the Revs frustrated in front of goal.

As the match wore on, Scott Caldwell found great success down the left flank with several picture perfect through balls, but nothing too considerable came of them. At the same time, DC rarely threatened Bobby Shuttleworth’s goal, which allowed the Revs to maintain possession and try to shift around DC’s defense.

Their persistence finally paid off in the first minute of stoppage time when Chris Tierney served in a patented in-swinging service from the right corner flag. Agudelo rose highest and directed a powerful header towards goal, but Hamid’s save fell right to the feet of a waiting Charlie Davies. The striker made no mistake and slammed home his fifth goal of the year to propel the home side into a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the initial stages of the second half, the narrative of the first half was playing out in nearly identical fashion. DC and New England both had their share of the ball, but neither could find any openings between the lines or over the top. And then the 52nd minute rolled around and the tides turned greatly.

Chris Tierney challenged Chris Pontius along the right side of his defensive box and came in with his studs high along the DC midfielder’s knee. Justifiably so, Mark Geiger issued a straight red card and the Revs were down to 10 men.

No more then ten minutes later, Geiger went to the back pocket for a second time. Nguyen, who earned a yellow card late in the first half, tussled with Davy Arnaud near midfield and threw an elbow, drawing his second yellow of the game. Just like that the Revs were down to nine men with slightly more than 30 minutes remaining on the clock.

With a two-man advantage in hand, possession heavily shifted in DC’s favor, but chances were hard to come by for the black and red. Nonetheless, their control of the game paid major dividends in the 80th minute when Taylor Kemp found acres of space along the left hand side.

The left-back zipped in a grass-cutting cross that Jairo Arrieta met at the near post. The Costa Rican made no mistake and slid the ball inside the post to tie the game up at one.

DC became energized by the equalizer and the Revs were undoubtedly frustrated, but both combined for a highly combustable end to the match. Yellow cards and fouls started occurring at will as the Revs ardently tried to secure the point and DC sought to escape Gillette with a crucial Eastern Conference win.

Despite all of that, DC and the Revs could not eke out three points and both were left to settle with a solitary point. New England's next game occurs on Sunday May 31 at home against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Revs are coming off a midweek thrashing as they were downed 4-2 by Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday. The team will hope for a better result against United as they will likely be welcoming back Bobby Shuttleworth, Andrew Farrell, and Charlie Davies to the starting lineup.

D.C. United are also coming off a loss as a late-game winner gave the Philadelphia Union full points last Sunday. The game epitomized Ben Olsen's "grind it out" style, though they were on the wrong side of the result this time. If United are going to avoid losing two straight, they will be doing so without some big names as Fabian Espindola and others are listed as out on the most recent report.

What's the best way to find out about DC United's stellar start to 2015? We talk to guys at BR&U about today's first place clash in Foxborough.

For those who thought 2014 was an aberration for DC United, well, you'd be wrong. Last year's regular season conference champs are still in first place, but that could change today at Gillette Stadium. We exchanged questions with Ben Bromley (a solid Twitter follow in general but has been on top of the DCU Stadium news in particular) over at Black and Red United, to see our responses to his questions click here.

TBM: It feels like D.C. United is sort of like the Rodney Dangerfield of MLS: you get no respect. All you've done is continue last season's form by topping the East yet again so far this year, and yet it feels as though everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Why do you think that is?

B&RU: I think it is a number of things. From 2008 to 2010 the team was in steady decline, 2011 had a brief bright spot at the end of the year with Dwayne De Rosario, and 2013 was an awful year as well. That is a long time of of United being out of the national spotlight, and so it is easy to not talk about United when you haven't been talking about United in years. Also, new stadiums have been opening throughout the league, and they have either revitalized existing franchises or welcomed in brand new teams. RFK Stadium is a lovable dump, but it also doesn't make for great television watching. Finally, Ben Olsen's teams do not play a flashy offensive style, but instead emphasize defense and goalkeeping. As a fan, I just prefer wins, but a more attractive style might get the national media interested, even if the results were worse.

TBM: Bill Hamid just re-upped with a more lucrative contract that should keep him stateside at least a little while longer. How much more time do you think D.C. has with their stellar homegrown goalkeeper, and why is he just so darn good?

B&RU: Anything after this year is gravy. We all know that Bill wants to go to Europe, and United would have had to sell him this summer if they wanted to get anything for him. With the new contract, they can sell him in the offseason if Bill finds a good situation for him, or wait until he is ready to leave if if is not this offseason. Hamid gets a good raise and guaranteed starts, which will help keep him in the national team picture. I don't think that Hamid wants to sign abroad and then sit on the bench for four years, like Brad Guzan; he has specifically mentioned David De Gea as a model he wants to follow, a young keeper who just steps right in and starts. This contract helps United, but it also helps Hamid find the exact right situation for him without languishing on a bench somewhere.

TBM: Chris Rolfe had success overseas and looked good in Chicago, but then sputtered. Now, it looks like he's coming back into his own in Washington and he's really making that offense tick. How does he direct and influence the attack, and what do you think can be done to stop him?

B&RU: The Chris Rolfe trade is one of the greatest heists that Dave Kasper has ever pulled on the rest of the league, sending allocation money to Chicago in exchange for Rolfe. He made an immediate impact last season, and his absence was tremendous at the end of the season last year. He brings an audacity to the team that only Fabian Espindola can match: he is willing to run at players and do something creative, something unexpected, that is very difficult to stop. The best way to stop him is to prevent him from getting the ball, and especially do not let him get free and running.

TBM: Give us an under-the-radar player that Revolution fans should watch out for in this match.

B&RU: Miguel Aguilar is an under the radar player who has a bunch of potential. He has only played 118 minutes so far this season, most of that in his first start last week. He is a rookie winger who has been a spark off of the bench recently, helping to create a goal in the comeback against Orlando City and ripping a great shot off the post last week. He was supposed to go to Richmond this year, but has forced his way onto the field by his play.

TBM: Finally, let's have your projected starting XI and a scoreline prediction.

B&RU: Bill Hamid; Sean Franklin, Bobby Boswell, Kofi Opare, Chris Korb; Michael Farfan, Perry Kitchen, Davy Arnaud, Chris Pontius; Jairo Arrieta, Chris Rolfe

1-1: D.C. United have a good defense, and it will be good enough to get them a road point.

The smack talk has already begun.

The word "rivalry" is thrown around a lot in Major League Soccer, but I think it's safe to say that the New England Revolution don't like D.C. United. The two MLS originals have had plenty of spirited contests, many of which involved current head coaches Jay Heaps and Ben Olsen. While the Revs and DC won't step onto the field until Saturday night, the banter has already begun.

It all started when the Revolution's official account posted a video on Twitter that showed Slyde destroying a D.C. United welcome mat. From there, a match of wits was born.

DC United will be without some important contributors when they travel to Gillette Stadium to face the New England Revolution.

It looks as though the New England Revolution will continue to face teams that are missing big contributors while staying relatively healthy themselves.

The most recent injury report for D.C. United, who will visit Gillette Stadium for a Saturday night game, lists Fabian Espindola (right quad), Luis Silva (left hamstring), and Nick DeLeon (right hamstring) as out. All three players have the potential to be starters when full healthy and in form. Jairo Arrieta and Miguel Aguilar will likely benefit from the absences.

Things are looking good from a Revolution perspective as Darrius Barnes (left knee surgery) is the only player that's hampered, according to the injury report. It's worth noting that the Revs are coming off a midweek fixture, but did choose to rest several starters, including Andrew Farrell, Chris Tierney, and Charlie Davies. Other big names, including Jermaine Jones, Lee Nguyen, and Juan Agudelo, played the entire game.

Additionally, the Revs will be without Andy Dorman for tonight's match as he will serve a one-game suspension for yellow card accumulation.
