The Revolution put down D.C. United on Saturday night. Corey and Matty submitted player ratings to gauge the team's performance in what truly was a tale of two halves.

Bobby Shuttleworth: Average Rating - 5.5 (Corey 6, Matty 5)

Corey: Looked shaky at times but got the job done in the end. Revs are struggling the clear the ball out of the penalty area, though, and part of that falls on him...Matty: Am I the only one that though the Silva goal should have been saved?

Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 6.25 (Corey 6.5, Matty 6)

Corey: Made some impressive blocks on defense and was generally active on both sides of the ball. His service on Imbongo's goal was superb, and it's nice to see Tierney finding his rhythm again this season...Matty: Solid as a rock. Great service on the goal, and becoming a better defender as well. Smart player.

Jose Goncalves: Average Rating - 6 (Corey 6, Matty 6)

Corey: A steady match, but made some dangerous and questionable decisions here and there. Might have been a little lucky not to surrender a PK...Matty: Seemed a little off mentally. Places where he's usually so solid he looked a little unsettled, and I certainly thought it was a good shout for a PK.

Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 5.75 (Corey 5.5, Matty 6)

Corey: It seems fairly obvious why Heaps has opted to stick with him over Soares. His aerial presence is practically unmatched. It wasn't all good though...Matty: Strong in the air, and a good complement to JoGo. Glad to see there were no lingering effects of the head injury.

Andrew Farrell: Average Rating - 6.75 (Corey 7, Matty 6.5)

Corey: Passing, service, and defensive work-rate were all outstanding. A great game for the rookie...Matty: Rookie did it all on the night. Smart runs, strong defensively, good service too.

Clyde Simms: Average Rating - 5.75 (Corey 6, Matty 5.5)

Corey: Good pace and vision all game. Looking forward to him getting back to full fitness...Matty: Typical solid effort from the veteran. Still think he plays too many negative balls at times, but better safe than sorry.

Saer Sene: Average Rating - 7.25 (Corey 7.5, Matty 7)

Corey: Sene was an offensive catalyst all game, which is just what the Revs need out of him. This might have been his best game of the season so far...Matty: Dangerous. If there were only one word recaps that would be it.

Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 6.25 (Corey 6, Matty 6.5)

Corey: Nguyen showed up for this one, which is always a good thing. It feels like he is finding a groove lately...Matty: Better involvement, stronger presence. We all know this team is better when Lee is a major part of the recipe.

Kelyn Rowe: Average Rating - 6.5 (Corey 7, Matty 6)

Corey: Was an excellent 2-way player on the night, and almost bagged a goal for himself. More plaudits to add to his great season...Matty: A very strong appearance for the sophomore. Loved his commitment at both ends of the field.

Diego Fagundez: Average Rating - 6.25 (Corey 6, Matty 6.5)

Corey: Obviously frustrated with his lack of involvement for the first 60 minutes or so. Found a way to insert himself, though, in the best way possible...Matty: Smart vision and anticipation on the goal. Hopefully, this sparks him to a better run of form in the future.

Dimitry Imbongo: Average Rating - 6.75 (Corey 7, Matty 6.5)

Corey: Did just about everything right and has successfully shored up his place at the top of the depth chart...Matty: Incredibly strong, and knows how to get himself into the right types of scoring positions.

Scott Caldwell (sub): Average Rating - 6.5 (Corey 6.5, Matty 6.5)

Corey: Gave the Revs some new life in the second half, which surely was exactly the game plan...Matty: He just brings a different feel to the team on the field. Better vision, and more of a passing threat, he helped open up the field for the Revs.

Chad Barrett (sub): Average Rating - 5.25 (Corey 5.5, Matty 5)

Corey: Nothing remarkable but he looks good every time he steps on the field lately...Matty: Much ado about nothing as far as major contributions, but I love all the little things he does. He also has one of the best motors on the team.

Kevin Alston (sub): Average Rating - 11 (Corey 12*, Matty 10)

Corey*: Overridden by management (Steve). Welcome back, KA...Matty: Of course.

For the first time all season, the Revs have managed to occupy a playoff spot for more than a few hours. Now they have the task of keeping it for 13 more games, all against Eastern Conference opponents. Maybe the things that went right (and some of went wrong) on Saturday vs. D.C. United will give them the tools they need to succeed.

At the start of 2013, there were a handful of likely candidates poised for breakout seasons; among them were Diego Fagundez, Kelyn Rowe, Juan Toja, and Jerry Bengtson. Some have quite obviously lived up to that promise already, while others have of course fallen quite short. But, among those who were pegged for success this season, did anyone think that we'd be talking about the emergence of Dimitry Imbongo?

Imbongo is quickly becoming the offensive spearhead to the Revolution attack that we've been looking for all season-and maybe even longer. With great physicality and hold-up play coupled with finesse and vision in the final third, the Frenchman is making things happen for New England lately. He may only have 3 goals in MLS play so far this season, but even when he's not finding the back of the net he is creating key opportunities for the Revs. Last week in Columbus, for instance, it was his agile 1-on-1 maneuver and shot that forced the game-winning corner kick for New England. Against D.C. United on Saturday, he not only found himself at the end of a Chris Tierney cross for the equalizing goal, but he also fed Kelyn Rowe a picture-perfect pass in the penalty area that was just barely stopped by goalkeeper Joe Willis. These are just a few examples of his positive contributions.

Revs 2, D.C. 1

The Revolution overcame a slow start to turn around and earn a valuable road victory over D.C. United on Saturday night.

If he can keep it up, Imbongo might find himself firmly ensconced in the Revolution starting XI, at least until Juan Agudelo is back to full fitness. While Agudelo is still on the mend, however, Jay Heaps has certainly found his replacement in Imbongo, and the results are really coming through for him now.

The win against D.C. United was more than just the Imbongo show, of course. Impressive outings from Andrew Farrell, Chris Tierney, Kelyn Rowe, and Saer Sene are all a part of the victory as well. Saer Sene, in particular, might even have had his best game of 2013 on Saturday. The towering striker-turned-winger was catalytic in his role on the attack and it was his efforts that not only kept the Revs in the game in the second half but also set up the game-winner. He was 22/30 in his passing and showed a willingness to help out on defense. His stats also show that he won 3 headers on the night, something he used to shy away from in 2012. Though modest, his stats reflect an all-around successful night, and it's exactly that kind of game that the Revs needed out of him (and will continue to need out of him down the stretch).

Individual performances aside, the Revolution proved for the first time this season that they can successfully orchestrate a come-back. Prior to Saturday night's game, the Revs' previous 7 wins were all secured by way of a shut-out. Therefore, with this stat in consideration, Luis Silva's 8th minute goal was a true test for the Revs, and they were able to overcome it. This is a vital quality that New England had not shown to possess up until now, and it is one that they'll need to reflect on and learn from as they look to keep their 5th place playoff spot.

And while we're on the topic of learning lessons, the Revs would do well to practice their long-range shot stopping. And arguably no one needs to work on this more than Bobby Shuttleworth. Shuttleworth has now been beaten by long-range blasts from over 20 yards out in 4 of the Revs' last 6 games. Laurent Courtos, Adam Moffat, Nick LaBrocca, and Luis Silva have all figured out how to unlock the Revolution's stout backline and golden-glove candidate goalkeeper. If New England can't find a way to shut-down these types of opportunities, they will continue to be undone by this fundamental short-coming in their game.

Part of the equation just might be the player occupying the defensive-midfield role. Whether it's Scott Caldwell or Clyde Simms, the deep-lying midfielder typically occupies the space between the 25 and 50 yard lines. While the task of stopping long-range shots doesn't fall solely on them, there is certainly room for improvement, one could argue, in ensuring that these types of players are being covered by the defensive midfielder on opposing counter attacks. With Kalifa CIsse seemingly staying put as the summer transfer window approaches its end, perhaps he can find his way into the Revolution first-team lineup and show that he can stop these kinds of chances. Could a 3-way battle for the position soon be at hand? We shall see (but probably not, I would guess).

Indeed, there has been little-to-no activity for the Revs in this transfer window thus far. General Manager Mike Burns did state at the opening of the window that the club was looking at some players but that there was no intention of signing someone just for the sake of signing someone. And, despite some tough losses in the past couple weeks, Jay Heaps and his squad might just be proving that they have enough to make it to the playoffs without any further additions. But, if you ask me, teams are only going to get hungrier for a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference, and it's more likely than not that reinforcements are going to be needed.

Whatever happens this summer, the Revs will have truly an up-hill battle to keep their playoff position. Many if not all games from here on out will be pivotal in terms of staying in the running for a post-season berth. Upcoming games against the Houston Dynamo, Philadelphia Union, and Chicago Fire in particular will be crucial must-wins. And then there's the final two games of the season against the Columbus Crew to consider as well. Buckle up, kids, it's going to be a bumpy ride. But for the first time in a long time, there's a legitimate ray of hope shining on the New England Revolution this season.

After a brief hiatus, the Couch Captain returns to find the Revs have won back to back matches on the road. Maybe we'll take breaks from blogging more often?

I know, I know, I've missed you all too! It's been a crazy few weeks around these parts for me, and let me take the first few lines to tell you I apologize, and it'll never happen again!

Or should it?

After a difficult loss to Colorado that saw the Revolution concede two goals in a matter of minutes to lose the match, the boys in blue have reeled off two good wins on the road. While Columbus felt like a bit of a smash-and-grab, the victory over rivals D.C. United was doubly-sweet, as it came on the road, and also from behind.

So what's working in the recipe? Let's break it all down, Couch Captain Returns-style!

LINEUP: BOBBY SHUTTLEWORTH; CHRIS TIERNEY, JOSE GONÇALVES, STEPHEN McCARTHY, ANDREW FARRELL; CLYDE SIMMS; DIEGO FAGUNDEZ, LEE NGUYEN, KELYN ROWE, SAER SENE; DIMITRY IMBONGO

Good to see McCarthy return from his head trauma, which clearly shows that the second he's healthy, he's first choice. Heaps really relies on his strong play in the air, which when paired with JoGo, has rendered the Revs incredibly stout on set pieces and crosses.

Interesting to see Simms get the start, albeit against his old club. Caldwell has been doing a solid job filling in with the older veterans struggling with fitness (and with Cisse doing, well, who knows) so I was surprised to see Simms get the nod. This did give Revs fans a chance to see how different the team looks with either player on the field, as Caldwell took over in the second half. Simms is the ultimate professional, and is always solid and smooth, so I was totally cool with his start.

Great to see Rowe and Nguyen paired in the midfield together, as it makes the Revs offense so much better and faster than it does with Juan Toja involved. Both central mids looked up for it, and their tireless efforts really paid off in the second half when Caldwell came on.

Imbongo over Barrett was an interesting choice but not an un-welcome one. Barrett is clearly the more polished striker, but Imbongo's beastly physicality wreaks havoc on opposing defenses.

CHALKBOARD AND STYLE OF PLAY

This team definitely has a more of a stout defending/possession type feel to it when Simms is the midfield general. He's not always looking to play the ball forward positively, and is great at keeping possession, but his defensive positioning is what really impresses me. He sits back in front of the defenders, waits for the right moment, and ensures the team solidifies possession instead of wasting a good defensive win.

I've really enjoyed the play out of the two outside backs this season, and I have to be honest with you and admit that I didn't really know just how well Andrew Farrell could get forward. His speed, as well as vision, will make him all the more dangerous as he matures, and when paired with a great service man like Tierney, this offensive attack is THAT much more potent and unpredictable.

Heaps is still deploying Fagundez and Sene on opposite wings, but it does seem like they're inter-changing a little more frequently, which makes me happy. IF they can make it work like they did with Agudelo on the wing with Diego, watch out. It makes the attack very difficult to defend. This doesn't mean I like the tactic, but I certainly understand the potential, which showed on the Fagundez goal.

Dimitry Imbongo is soccer's version of the hockey goon. Doesn't always find the scoresheet, but will beat the bloody life out of you until you show weakness and it opens up opportunities for his teammates elsewhere. I've really grown to like him quite a bit. He's an enforcer. If this youngster ever figures out a little more composure in front of goal, you're looking at an Eddie Johnson type player.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Caldwell for Simms 46' - Changed the game. Revs were trailing, and needed a little more of an offensive boost, and they got it with Scott. Nice move by Heaps.

Chad Barrett for Fagundez 70' - I liked this one too. Bring on a strong hold-up player with good physical skills and composure to close out the victory on the road.

Kevin Alston for Imbongo 84' - Ton of emotion in this one, and I couldn't be happier for KA. He's from the DC area, and to make his triumphant return at RFK Stadium surely meant the world to him.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The Revolution will enter the month of August only six points back of first place with a game in hand on Kansas City.

Sorry, that line needed to be by itself. Think about that. We're approaching August, and this team is not only relevant, but challenging. They've got an incredibly big month ahead of them, with 5 matches against Eastern Conference foes. They do play Toronto FC twice, and have Chicago and Philadelphia at home, which is a very big point to make.

If the Revolution wish to stay in the hunt and challenge, they absolutely must make Gillette a fortress. Taking at least 6 points from 9 at home would be imperative at this stage of the season, and would go a long way to determining their playoff fate.

On the field, the absence of Juan Agudelo continues to be a major talking point, but with Jay Heaps instilling his own gritty, tough attitude in his team, they're just simply finding ways to make things work. Imbongo and Barrett are stepping up and making things happen up top, and Saer Sene continues to get better as his health improves. The Revs are going to need a few goals, and it's going to fall on these forwards to create some offense.

Lastly, it's all about the defense. I said in April that with this team playing defense the way they do, they can play with absolutely ANYBODY in MLS. This defense gives the Revs a fighting chance in every match and that's really all you can ask for. As the back four goes, so go the Revs, and with the first four months behind us, I'm perfectly confident that this team is headed onwards and upwards.

The Revolution overcame a 1-0 first-half deficit to earn three points against D.C. United away from home. Imbongo and Fagundez scored the goals, and veteran defender Kevin Alston finally made his return after being placed on the disabled list when he was diagnosed with leukemia.

The New England Revolution went down to Washington and earned a valuable three points against D.C. United, winning 2-1 in a match that ended in a balmy downpour. Luis Silva opened the scoring early in the first half, but the Revs came roaring back in the second through Dimitry Imbongo and Diego Fagundez.

The Revs had struggled hard in two previous meetings with D.C., drawing 0-0 at home and losing 3-1 in the Open Cup in Maryland, despite the fact that United sports the worst record in MLS. On a night where the referee did neither team any favors - several clear penalty shouts were turned down and both sides suffered from missed calls - New England finally managed to assert itself as the better team and get the needed result.

New England got off to a very poor start, and Kyle Porter nearly capitalized in the 7th minute when he picked up his own rebound and pushed his shot just wide of the far post. Just a minute later, Silva didn't miss after he was set up about 20-25 yards out. His low shot appeared to have Bobby Shuttleworth unsighted, and his late reaction saw it nestle into the back of the net.

Daniel Woolard nearly doubled the advantage in the 10th minute, but Fagundez headed the goal-bound ball off the line. By this point the Revs were in full panic mode, and D.C. continued to press the advantage. Porter had another shot blocked in the 17th minute.

Fortunes began to change in the 20th as the Revs got their best chance of the match to that point. Andrew Farrell volleyed a cleared ball back into the box for Sene, who got in on goal but had his shot smothered one-on-one with Joe Willis. New England started to claw their way back into the game, and in the 36th minute, an intelligent cut-back from Imbongo set up Kelyn Rowe perfectly, but his shot from the penalty spot was somehow parried away by Willis.

The second half got underway with a substitution, as Scott Caldwell replaced Clyde Simms. In the 51st minute, Lee Nguyen and Imbongo worked a one-two that had Nguyen in free and clear, but Willis came out and took him down in the box. The referee, however, declined to make the call, as he had already done previously in the match.

The Revs finally found the breakthrough in the 54th minute. Jose Goncalves passed out wide to Chris Tierney, who delivered an excellent whipping cross into the box that froze Willis and found the foot of Imbongo in the middle of the six. The Congolese striker finished easily for his third goal of the season.

New England took the lead not much later, in the 63rd minute. Imbongo took down an aerial ball on the touchline and dribbled inside, taking the ball into the attacking third. He cut inside and played a good diagonal ball to Saer Sene, who hesitated and then hit a masterful curling shot on goal that just bounced off the underside of the crossbar. Fagundez, who had a quiet night overall, was on hand to clean up, though, heading the ball in from inside the six.

United created some nervy moments near the end of the match as they started throwing numbers forward and trying to gain the equalizer, but the Revs were able to hold on and get the win. Amusingly, the referee blew the whistle for full time while Saer Sene was all alone and bearing down on an empty net following a set-piece clearance. It had no real effect on the outcome, but it was strange to see the ref blow the game dead during a clear goalscoring opportunity, and with goals scored now the main tie-breaker, perhaps that's a goal that comes back to haunt the Revs in the end. Regardless, three points are three points.

With that win, the Revs also find themselves in 5th place. It's perhaps temporary, as other matches have yet to be played, but it's still a good place to be for the time being.

Perhaps even more important than the win - in the grand scheme of life, at least - was the reappearance of Kevin Alston. Imbongo left the match late through injury, and he was replaced by the speedy defender, who made his first appearance since his diagnosis with a form of leukemia. Alston's treatment has gone so well that he is cleared to play again, and everyone in Revs nation, and indeed all of MLS, is happy to see him healthy and on the field.

The Revolution will be back in action again on August 4th at home to Toronto, after the All-Star Break.

The New England Revolution have made the trip down I-95 to the nation's capital to take on close rivals D.C. United in an all-Eastern Conference clash. Head coach Jay Heaps has run out a fairly predictable lineup with just one notable absence in his quest for victory.

Clyde Simms comes in for Scott Caldwell, which indicates that Heaps must want to go with experience. Still, Caldwell has hardly put a foot wrong all season, and it certainly seemed as though he'd won the job fair and square. Simms' game is a little less forward-facing than Caldwell's, which could explain the move as well since the Revs are on the road.

New England would like a win in the this weekend's I95 Corridor Cup match-up, but it is do or die for D.C. United as a loss would essentially eliminate them from this year's competition.

This week, D.C. United pulled off the ultimate gamesmanship. In order to confuse, anger, and troll the New England Revolution, they announced plans for a soccer-specific stadium just days before playing in an enormous I95 Cup match in RFK.

If D.C. can win the final four matches in the I95 competition they could conceivable still win the whole thing, salvaging an otherwise awful season. New England as well should be looking to win out. A draw will hurt New England's cause, even though taking the full three will still leave them in third place, a full point behind the Philadelphia Union - who following this weekend will have two games in hand on New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia, and D.C. leaving them in a comfortable position in the second half of the season.

DC who has recently taken 4 out of 6 points from New England in all competitions will be looking to win in front of their home crowd, as there are euphoric feelings around the club following their stadium announcements. New England will be looking to bring DC back down to earth - as lest we forget the Chicago Fire just put a beat-down on DC last weekend.

Here is the most current incantation of the I95 Corridor Cup table:

D.C. United has been just awful this season, but they have a favorable 1-1-0 record against the Revs in 2013. It seems like the kind of luck that just can't hold.

The New England Revolution have to face D.C. United on Saturday night in the nation's capital. It will be the second regular-season meeting between the two sides in 2013; the last ended in a dour 0-0 draw in Gillette. They also met in Open Cup competition, where United ended the Revs' cup dreams with a 3-1 defeat.

Jay Heaps was quite bullish on the quality of United's roster in spite of their poor record after the 0-0 draw, but no results since have validated that opinion. Regardless, D.C. always plays the Revs tough, and it won't be easy to pull three points out of RFK.

Today's Q&A is with Adam Taylor of Black and Red United, SB Nation's D.C. United blog. If you'd like, you can read our last two Q&A's with him, for the U.S. Open Cup and for the last in-season meeting.

TBM: I'm not trying to be deliberately offensive here, but I think we can all agree that this year's edition of D.C. United is horrendous, yes? If that's the case, why on Earth have you guys been able to get a draw and a win off of the Revs in two meetings so far?

AT: Oh, no offense taken. Mostly all I hear is stadiumstadiumstadium.

As to your question, I want to say hate? Hate and ritual sacrifice, maybe? Although our hate of the Jersey Metroscum is stronger, and that didn't do us much good in our second meeting with them, so I'm at a loss. In all seriousness, I think United's midfield has had a way of clogging things up and making games ugly, even against good teams, this year. These aren't Steve Nicol's Revs anymore, and you guys seem to have trouble battling against a physical central midfield - and with Perry Kitchen and John Thorrington in there, that's exactly what D.C. United have.

TBM: Oftentimes with any team that has a poor season, there's one particular area where they just couldn't seem to get anything right and it proved to be their downfall. In D.C.'s case, however, you have the worst offense and the second-worst defense in the league statistically. Even with all that going wrong, though, there have been bright spots - specifically, two wins and four draws. What went right in those matches that hasn't gone right in the other 14?

AT: In those games, the defense went right. In at least two of the draws, it wasn't the defense, actually, so much as the goalkeeper - Bill Hamid was MLS Player of the Week in the third week of the year due to his headstanding performance in Jersey, and Joe Willis was nearly as impressive in keeping the clean sheet in this month's draw in Colorado. The wins were both choppy 1-0 affairs at RFK Stadium, where United finally managed to both create and convert a chance. Basically, the only things that have really gone right this year have been out at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Open Cup play.

TBM: Last time we did this little exchange for a regular-season match, you said that the improvement shown in the last two-thirds of the season will determine whether or not Ben Olsen keeps his job. Have you seen any improvement yet?

AT: If you'd asked me a week ago, I'd have said yes, but Saturday's thrashing at the hands (feet?) of the Fire clearly makes me reconsider. I still think Olsen is safe through the duration of this season, but there have been so many new pieces brought in since the transfer window opened a couple weeks ago - and only one league match, which obviously didn't go so well for the Black-and-Red. I think whether and how those pieces integrate into the side will have a lot to do with Olsen's status come the winter. Luis Silva scored a Goal of the Week nominee of a goal in Chicago, and he looks pretty well set to play a big role going forward. Jared Jeffrey is an interesting prospect in central midfield, and we'll have to see whether he can push Thorrington for minutes alongside Kitchen. Up top, Conor Doyle is another young American, and he actually seems to fit what Olsen appears to want out of a target man: big, physical, good passing and an ability to, y'know, finish. He's only hear through the end of the year on a loan from Derby County in the English second division, so it could be interesting to see what happens if (if.) he does well between now and October.

TBM: Tell us which player you think D.C. fears most in a Revolution uniform for this match.

AT: Clyde Simms? No, it's probably either Diego Fagundez or the two-headed monster of Kelyn Rowe and Lee Nguyen. Fagundez reminds a lot of us of Andy Najar for all the right reasons, and his attacking movements from the outside in can be hell to deal with, especially when you have flabbergasted defenders the way we do. Rowe and Nguyen, if they can shake the marking of Thorrington and Kitchen, could just pick United's back line apart like so many pieces of string cheese. Really, if either of them (Fagundez or the two-headed monster) gets going, there's not a lot of reason to think Revs fans who make it down for the game won't be driving back up I-95 with smiles on their faces.

TBM: Finally, let's have your projected starting XI and a scoreline prediction.

AT: With Bill Hamid still with the USMNT and with Chris Pontius and Dwayne De Rosario still hindered somewhat by injuries and fitness concerns, I think we'll see the following 4-2-3-1: Joe Willis; Chris Korb, Dejan Jakovic, Ethan White, Taylor Kemp; Perry Kitchen, John Thorrington; Kyle Porter, Luis Silva, Nick DeLeon; Conor Doyle.

After the defensive fiasco we saw last week in Chicago, it's hard for me to pick anything but a loss here. But I didn't get into blogging because it was easy: Give me something new. Give me a scoring draw. Goals from DeLeon and Rowe leave things level after 90.
