Alexander Buttner has signed a two-year deal with the Revs, according to de Gelderlander.

Buttner, 30, is a left back who most recently played for Vitesse (Netherlands), which is also where he began his career. Between those stints, he spent time with Manchester United (2012–2014), Dynamo Moscow (2014–2017), and Anderlecht (2016 loan).

Buttner spent time on trial with the Revs alongside former Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell. Buttner has earned a contract with the MLS club, but won’t be available to play until the 2020 season.

The Revs entered the 2019 season with Edgar Castillo as their starting left back. Although the veteran has offered dangerous crosses in the final third, he has received heavy criticism for his defensive contributions. Castillo hasn’t played in recent weeks due to a rib injury. DeJuan Jones and Jalil Anibaba have gotten opportunities in his stead.

The Buttner rumor could mean that the Revs are ready to move on from Castillo or it could be a move meant to increase the competition for minutes.
