The New England Revolution has announced that defender Donnie Smith will join the Rochester Rhinos (USL) on a short-term loan. Smith will return to New England after the Rhinos' match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday.

Smith is in his fourth year with the Revolution after being drafted 21st overall in the 2013 SuperDraft. The UNC-Charlotte product has made two MLS regular-season appearances, both of them starts. In 2015, he played as a center back in the Revolution's 1-0 loss to the Charlotte Independence in the US Open Cup.

This won't be Smith's first time in Rochester, as the 25-year-old made six appearances for the Rhinos in 2014. This includes an appearance in Rochester's postseason quarterfinal defeat to LA Galaxy II.

Originally a midfielder, Smith has recently been transitioning into an attacking left back. He was on the bench for Saturday's 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls but didn't see game action.
