There’s nothing soccer fans love more than goals and we want to know who will score the most for the New England Revolution in 2018. We’ll have to wait months to find out the real answer but our staff has some educated guesses.
Seth: Juan Agudelo
It looks as through Agudelo will be primarily used as a striker, which is something fans have calling for during the last couple of years. I believe that Agudelo, who is just 25, will repay coach Friedel’s good faith by having his best season to date. Agudelo has always shown flashes of talent but consistency has alluded him. As long as he can stay healthy, I predict we’ll see double digit goals.
Jonathan: Krisztian Nemeth
Through injury and lapse in concentration – yes, that red card at Sporting Kansas City was stupid – Revs fans, in 2017, never got to fully see what Nemeth is capable of. He can be a stone-cold killer in front of goal, though. As the center forward, Juan Agudelo will draw plenty of attention from an opponent’s center backs, opening up pockets of space for the Hungarian forward to operate in. He’ll reach double digits, and likely one-up his SKC form from 2015 (10 goals, six assists in MLS play).
Jake: Cristian Penilla
I think the Revs will do a lot of scoring by committee, but the one constant I see on the field will be Penilla out wide this year. Yes, I think Lee Nguyen will be starting a lot at some point as well, but I think Agudelo, Nemeth, Rowe, Fagundez, etc., will be rotating around a lot at striker and the other wing position. Penilla was a force this preseason and I think he’s going to score goals in a variety of ways, including cleaning up a lot of second chances that the Revs haven’t had a lot of luck with the past few years. Kei Kamara and Nguyen led the Revs last year with 12 and 11 goals respectively and I think a similar number would be enough to win the team’s Golden Boot this year, and there could be 3-4 candidates but I’ll tab Penilla who should also earn some Newcomer of the Year consideration as well.
