In a world in which accounts of racial discrimination pop up all too often, it appears as though a member of the New England Revolution was recently on the receiving end of some nonsensically cruel language.
According to Honduran paper Diez, Jerry Bengtson, who is on loan to to Club Atletico Belgrano of the Argentinian first division, suffered a bout of racist language.
Bengtson entered Sunday's match against Arsenal de Sarandi with six minutes remaining and quickly got involved in a heavy challenge with his opponent, Damian Perez.
Due to translation issues it is unclear as to who received a yellow card for the challenge, but Perez's racial remark followed suit immediately following the referee's discipline. Furthermore, the Arsenal player's words were caught on television and appear to refer to Bengtson's skin color.
No further discipline or bureaucratic action has emerged since the report first emerged, but it will be important to see how the situation unfolds in the coming days.
