Following the departure of midfielder Lianne Sanderson, the Breakers leaked news of a pending roster move, one that had many supporters looking for a headline-making acquisition. Instead, the team added depth, signing team captain Cat Whitehill and backup goalkeeper Jami Kranich through 2015.

Whitehill, who has served as a rock along the Breakers back line for the past four seasons (two seasons of NWSL play), led the team in minutes played last season, totaling 2,101 minutes (24 starts). The former USWNT center back and interim head coach added an offensive element to her game in 2014, constantly pushing forward to create attacking opportunities. Whitehill contributed one assist while stinging three shots on frame.

Kranich, 22, returns for a second season in Boston, having joined the club in 2014 as the 32nd overall pick in the NWSL draft. The Villanova alum did not appear in a match last season, a testament to Alyssa Naeher's durability throughout the course of the season. Instead, Kranich used her first full season to develop under the league's premier goalkeeper, waiting for her opportunity to shine on the NWSL stage.

Supporters in search of Sanderson's heir will have to remain patient; the Breakers' roster appears nearly complete.
