Tommy McNamara will play any position head coach Bruce Arena asks if it gets him closer to winning an MLS Cup.

The 30-year-old McNamara has been a regular contributor since joining the New England Revolution on Aug. 17, 2020, making a total of 26 appearances. He’s played in every game this year, which includes six starts.

McNamara has been moved around, playing various midfield positions. He’s willing step into any role in his quest to help the team.

“I’ll do whatever’s best for the team,” McNamara explained. “I want this team to be successful. At the end of the day, at the end of the year, I want us to be in position to lift a trophy.”

McNamara says that conversations with Arena have been limited, which is fine because he trusts the coaching legend. McNamara notes that Arena has “all the experience in the world” so he has “trust in his decision-making.”

A lot of that trust stems from McNamara believing that Arena understands what he has to offer. This has led to him feeling comfortable regardless of the position he’s being asked to play.

“I’m very happy to play for this coach,” McNamara said of Arena. “I think what’s a blessing for me is he kind of just understands me as a player and as a person, and the qualities that I bring to the table.”
