New England Revolution fans saw Matt Turner appear to be shaken up not once but twice on Saturday and one incident left Henry Kessler quite angry.
In the 85th minute, Columbus was searching for a game-winning goal in the opening match of their new home stadium. Gyasi Zardes sent a shot on goal and Turner was able to make the save but allowed a slight rebound.
The goalkeeper stretched out to bring the ball into his possession but not before Alexandru Matan came sliding in trying to score. Matan collided with Turner and quickly Kessler responded getting in his opponent’s grill.
After the game, Kessler said that he was stunned that Matan walked away without a card or even a caution.
The 23-year-old said, “I thought Matt [Turner] got kicked in the head. I’m always going to defend my teammates. As soon as I saw studs go toward his head, obviously I was upset. I called to referee and obviously approached their player as well. I’m shocked that he got away without a card, without a caution on that. But we have to defend our teammates, that’s something we talk about before the match. Whether it’s Carles, probably the most fouled player in the league, or our goalkeeper, or whoever. You have to defend your teammates and yeah, I’m surprised he got away with that challenge.”
Luckily Turner appeared to be okay and was able to finish the match.
Kessler’s response is exactly what you want to see. Fans should want each and every player fighting for one another out on the pitch.
Hopefully, opponents will take notice and realize if they try messing with Turner or Carles Gil, they will have to deal with Kessler.
