After dealing with an impactful amount of injuries, the New England Revolution will have at least one player back available for selection on Saturday.
Bruce Arena spoke to the media and when asked about Wilfrid Kaptoum’s status, the Head Coach and Sporting Director stated that the midfielder practiced with the team this week and will be available for selection against the Columbus Crew.
Kaptoum will definitely be needed by the Revs with the club’s depth about to be truly tested. With Matt Turner and Tajon Buchanan selected by their respective national teams for the Gold Cup, New England will need everyone on the roster to step up their play.
The midfield has become an area of concern with a carousel of players staring next to Matt Polster. Maciel has started the most games with Tommy McNamara just behind him with five starts.
Revolution fans really haven’t been able to see a lot of the Cameroonian midfielder. Kaptoum has only started two games and has just 180 minutes played.
In recent games, Maciel hasn’t looked his best. He has made some questionable decisions and had some poor touches. Right now it seems like New England needs a player like Kaptoum to step in.
From the little bit of play fans have seen from the 24-year-old, there are definitely some reasons to be excited. Kaptoum’s skill on the ball was shown immediately with him making some impressive passes and dribbles. More importantly for someone who stands at 5’9,” he is able to be physical when defending and can take some of the pressure off Polster in that area of the game.
So it’s unknown if the Revolution will play Kaptoum on Saturday, but Arena and his coaching staff must be excited to have him back for selection.
