Tajon Buchanan named to Canada’s preliminary Gold Cup roster

Coming off a 4-0 aggregate win over Haiti and advancing to the octagonal of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers in September, Team Canada now shifts its focus ahead to the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup starting on July 10^th running through August 1^st.

As part of preparing for the Gold Cup, nations involved in the competition announced their preliminary rosters on Friday. After successful stints with the Canadian National Team on the senior and youth levels, New England Revolution Midfielder Tajon Buchanan earned a spot on Canada’s provisional roster.

Buchanan’s section comes days after closing out a 3-0 win over Haiti in Leg 2 of World Cup Qualifiers. Although not featured much during the knockout stages, Buchanan appeared in Canada’s two final group stage matches against Aruba and Suriname.

Buchanan played a combined 99 minutes and notched two assists during the last two group stage matches.

Before joining the first team, Buchanan had multiple stand-out performances for the U-23 Canadian National Team during CONCACAF Olympic Qualifiers. Buchanan would have an impactful debut for the U-23’s as he would notch a brace in the opening 21 minutes in Canada’s 2-0 victory over El Salvador. Buchanan would play 263 minutes of Group Stage action, helping Canada advance to the semifinal match where they lost 2-0 to Mexico.

Although new to the international scene, Tajon Buchanan has quickly risen through the ranks of the Canadian National Team and will look to continue doing so as he will look to earn a spot on the final roster for Canada for the Gold Cup.

If named to the final 23-man roster, Buchanan and Canada will compete in Group B alongside the United States, Martinique, and the winner of a preliminary match.
