Former New England Revolution news: Cristian Penilla officially signs with Club Deportivo Cuenca

The former New England Revolution midfielder has found a new home in Ecuador.

It has been a while since Cristian Penilla left the New England Revolution but the 30-year-old has a new home. On Wednesday it was officially announced that Penilla would be joining Club Deportivo Cuenca.

The midfielder is heading back home Deportivo Cuenca is currently in the first division down in Ecuador. Penilla has made two total appearances for the Ecuadorian National Team scoring a single goal.

The last time that Penilla played in Ecuador was in 2016 for Barcelona SC Guayaquil. In that season he was able to tally seven goals in 14 appearances.

Penilla’s new club had a rough 2021 season. Deportivo Cuenca finished 12th out of 16 clubs in LigaPro with a record of 4-3-7.

In the Ecuadorian’s final season with New England, he amassed 14 appearances and three assists. At 30 years old, Penilla will be looking to reenergize his career back at home when Deportivo Cuenca hits the field for their upcoming season.
