New England Revolution were hoping to see Earl Edwards Jr. compete for the backup goalkeeper job in 2021. It looks like they will have to wait a bit longer.
On Wednesday the New England Revolution announced that the 29-year-old had arthroscopic knee surgery earlier in the day. The initial prognosis has him missing four to six weeks.
Edwards Jr. has made 50 professional appearances in his career. His most recent stint came with D.C. United’s affiliate Loudoun United FC.
Now of course Revolution fans know that Matt Turner has locked down the starting job, but it would have been interesting to see Brad Knighton and Edwards Jr. compete for the backup role.
At the earliest, Edwards Jr. would make it back before the start of the regular season, but he also would need to return to fitness. So for now it looks like Knighton will be the backup.
One thing fans won’t be waiting much longer for is the start of the regular season. New England returns to the pitch on April 17th when they go up against the Chicago Fire in the windy city.
While Edwards Jr. must have been hoping to be watching from the sidelines, he might just be staying home and focusing on rehabbing his knee.
