The New England Revolution are expecting to announce a new acquisition soon, according to head coach Bruce Arena.

During a virtual press conference held on Wednesday, Arena was asked about his midfield options since Luis Caicedo will miss the season in order to recover from a surgery on his right knee. The coach named Diego Fagundez, Kelyn Rowe, Scott Caldwell, and Wilfried Zahibo before saying that a new face could arrive soon.

“We’ll probably add an additional player this week,” Arena remarked.

The comment comes on the same day that The Daily Record reported that Matt Polster has signed a multiyear contract with the Revolution. The contract would reportedly last 2.5 years with the Revs having a club option after that.

Polster was drafted by the Chicago Fire in 2015. The first round draft pick operated as a center midfielder before moving to the right back position. He joined Rangers of Scotland in 2019 but is now looking to return stateside. The Revs will reportedly pay Rangers £350,000 to acquire the American.

Arena declined to comment on the rumor, saying that he “can’t speak of any new player signings at this point.” He did note that new players could come into the MLS bubble to train, but wouldn’t be eligible to play in the tournament.

Even without the addition, Arena has full faith in his current crop of midfielders as they prepare to begin play in the MLS is Back Tournament.

“I’m confident in the group we have,” Arena said. “You’ll see probably different combinations in the three games in group play.”
