The New England Revolution already made one needle-moving acquisition bringing in Christian Mafla, but the Revs aren't done yet. On Wednesday they announced another acquisition as Wilfrid Kaptoum will be playing for New England in 2021.
What will stand out the most to fans is his spell with FC Barcelona. Kaptoum began training in legendary La Masia at the age of 12. While he only made three appearances for Barca, but that does include a start in a 2015-16 Champions League match.
Kaptoum featured more for Barcelona’s B team where he made over 40 appearances and tallied six goals and three assists.
Then in 2018 Kaptoum moved to Real Betis and made 15 appearances for the La Liga club. There the Cameroonian midfielder also appeared in the Europa League as well as the Copa Del Rey.
Kaptoum’s latest stint was with UD Almería in the second division in Spain where he made seven starts. This move seems like a great opportunity for a fresh start for the former Barca man.
The Cameroonian also made appearances on the international level. He was a regular in Cameroon’s squad during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
That is a resume that speaks for itself and will likely have Revolution fans excited. Head Coach Bruce Arena also seems excited for Kaptoum’s arrival.
He said. “Wilfrid Kaptoum is a talented central midfielder who has been developed in an excellent soccer culture. He will bring a great work ethic and experience to our team. Wilfrid’s pace and passing ability will help strengthen our midfield. We believe he will be a quality addition to the Revolution, and we look forward to his arrival in Foxborough.”
With his experience, it seems likely that Kaptoum is a candidate for the starting XI. It’s rather easy to imagine him pairing well with Gil due to their shared experience over in Spain.
Revolution fans will likely be excited about the acquisition of Kaptoum and hoping he can make an impact at Gillette Stadium.
But fans will continue to wonder, does Arena and New England have any more tricks up their sleeve?
