On Monday the New England Revolution made their first splash of the offseason. Bruce Arena and co. have brought in 27-year-old defender Christian Mafla.
Mafla hails from Columbia where he has played in the Categoría Primera A for the last five seasons. His most recent stint came with Atlético Nacional where he played in 78 games. After playing in a career-high 30 league games for Nacional in 2019, Mafla only appeared in 11 games in 2020.
Still, Mafla has lifted some hardware in his career with Nacional. In 2018 he helped lead the club to its fourth Copa Colombia championship.
Looking at his career as a whole, Mafla is nearing 200 professional appearances with stops at Atlético Bucaramanga, Boyacá Chicó, América de Cali, Sud América, and Olimpo.
Arena talked about his new signing saying, “Christian Mafla is a left-sided defender who offers both experience and skill in his position, making him a very good addition to our backline. Christian is a strong one-on-one defender, a talented passer, and is comfortable moving into the attack. We are delighted to welcome him to the Revolution.”
Mafla’s signing shows that the Revs aren't afraid to make some moves and will also likely calm fans down who were nervous about the team’s lack of activity after the club’s season came to an end... two weeks ago.
It will be interesting to see what is next for New England as the 2021 season rapidly approaches, with March being the likely start of the season.
But the signing of Mafla should please fans and excited for what else could be coming from the club.
