New England Revolution fans have been asking for the team to make a move. While they finally got it on Saturday. The Revs signed free agent goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr.
Edwards Jr. spent the first four years of his career with Orlando City SC. They selected the goalkeeper with the 43rd overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. He went on to make only 12 appearances for the club.
The San Diego California native’s most recent stint came with D.C. United. Edwards Jr. spent most of his time with United’s USL Championship affiliate, Loudoun United FC. In 2019 he made 16 appearances for Loudoun.
Edwards Jr. will already be familiar with some of the coaching staff. He played under Revolution assistant coach Richie Williams.
Fans will be wondering what was the decision making behind such a move. New England already has Matt Turner along with Brad Knighton. The team’s depth at goalkeeper is now immense.
Edwards Jr. is also still relatively young. At the age of 28, he still has some quality years ahead of him.
It will be interesting to see what New England does next. With the 2021 regular season just around the corner, if the Revolution want to make a splash they will have relatively soon.
