If you put it on a shirt, it has to be true.
At least that’s the mantra that MLSStore.com has apparently adopted as they have designed a shirt to immortalize the “rivalry” between the New England Revolution and Philadelphia Union. The shirt says that this Saturday’s “grudge match” is part of the Liberty Rivalry.

I’m actually a big supporter of the Revs and Union forging a legitimate rivalry. In fact, it makes sense. The two teams are relatively close and the states that they call home share history that dates back to before the Revolutionary War. Also important is that the Revs don’t have a proper rival.
That said, rivalries can’t be forced. They should come from the fans after years of intense battles. The Revs and Union have had some interesting matches in the past, but nothing to create hatred between the two fan bases.
In short, I’m not buying the shirt.
