Heaps, 41, spent almost six seasons as the head coach of the New England Revolution, the team he played for from 2001-2009. He was fired last September after a disappointing two-game road trip during which his team lost 7-0 to Atlanta United and 3-1 to Sporting KC. Heaps did some media work with MLSSoccer.com while waiting for his next challenge.
Heaps is now ready to get back into the arena as he will be tasked with building an expansion team. The former player is the second full-time employee hired by Birmingham Legion FC, the first being vice president Morgan Copes. Heaps is expected to play a big role in player acquisitions.
Heaps will be revealed to local fans soon. With that on the horizon, he decided to take to Twitter to express excitement for his new job.
Proud to be named Pres/GM of @bhmlegion and very excited to be part of the Birmingham sports community. #HammerDown #bhmlegion #USL
