Lee Nguyen reaches major career milestone

Tierney: “If we were playing in a bigger market in this league, I think he’d be up there in All Star and MVP voting.”

Lee Nguyen reached a major career milestone on Saturday night when he collected his 50th career goal. It’s a feat that most players will never accomplish and one that will take time for Nguyen to fully appreciate.

“It’s not easy to get 50 goals, let alone 50 goals with one club so yeah, it’s a big honor,” Nguyen explained. “I might reflect on it after the season.”

His latest tally was against Toronto FC. The crafty midfielder came off the bench in the 64th minute to give his team the spark that it needed. 18 minutes into his shift, Nguyen got on the end of a Chris Tierney feed to grab the game’s first goal.

Nguyen has been sensational all year, as he currently sits on 10 goals and 15 assists. Despite these incredible numbers, the 30-year-old is hardly mentioned when pundits talk about the best players in the league. To his teammates, it’s a real shame.

“If we were playing in a bigger market in this league, I think he’d be up there in All Star and MVP voting,” Chris Tierney said. “He’s that important and quality of a player, so to see him continue to play so well is great for us.”

Nguyen, a professional through and through, was only willing to take a second to acknowledge the achievement he just accomplished before he redirected his focus to the Revolution’s next opponent, Orlando City SC. There will be time in the future to celebrate reaching 50 goals. For now, Nguyen is fully committed to ending the season in a positive way.

“I feel like it’s going to be something to look back on and be like, ‘Wow!,’” Nguyen explained. “But this is the one where you got to take it and then move on because we got a quick turnaround on Wednesday, so I got to enjoy tonight, but then get ready again."
