The New England Revolution kept their playoff hopes alive after collecting a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.
Teal Bunbury forced the first save of the game in the 21st minute when he fired a shot towards goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic. The attempt was assisted by Diego Fagundez.
The Whitecaps made a change in the 29th minute when Matias Laba exited with an injury. The defensive midfielder was replaced by Andrew Jacobson.
The Revs had an opportunity to break the deadlock before halftime after the Whitecaps committed a handling offense just outside the box. Diego Fagundez took the free kick but he couldn’t clear the wall.
The Revs looked inspired as they came out of the locker room and gained the lead eight minutes into the second half. Teal Bunbury did the damage, scoring his fourth of the campaign. Rowe won the initial header off a Whitecaps’ goal kick, pushing the ball forward to Kei Kamara. Kamara passed it to a wide Rowe, who connected with Bunbury.
The Whitecaps had multiple opportunities to bring the game level. First, Brek Shea had a clear chance in front of the net in the 60th minute but whiffed. In the 71st minute Cristian Techera rattled the crossbar with a stinging free kick. Nothing materialized, however, as the game ended 1-0.
The Revs will now return to the road as they travel to face New York City FC on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 6 pm.
