It took extra time and penalties but the New England Revolution learned their next US Open Cup opponent on Wednesday, as they’ll host the New York Red Bulls in a Quarterfinal match on July 13th. The game will take place at Harvard University’s Jordan Field with kickoff set for 7:30 pm.
The Revs advanced to the Quarterfinal by besting D.C. United 2-1. D.C. struck first through José Guillermo Ortiz. The home side battled back, as Diego Fagundez scored a free kick and rookie Brian Wright nabbed his first career goal.
It took the Red Bulls longer to secure their spot as they were tied 1-1 with the Philadelphia Union after 90 minutes. Sacha Kljestan and Roland Alberg each had a tally, which forced extra time. With neither team finding a breakthrough, penalties became a necessity. The Red Bulls ultimately reigned supreme with Felipe scoring the game-winner.
Before the Revs face the Red Bulls in the Open Cup, they will welcome the team from New Jersey for MLS play on July 5th.
