A fourth round SuperDraft pick out of the University of San Francisco, Josh Smith exceeded expectations when he earned a contract with the Revolution.
One month later, Smith exceeded expectations again when he made his MLS debut against the Portland Timbers. The six-foot-four center back held his own against Fanendo Adi & Co., flashing confidence and grit during the 1-1 draw.
To earn the start, Smith beat out Benjamin Angoua, whose early-season performance has been overshadowed by a pair of defensive miscues.
Suddenly, Jays Heaps has a lineup controversy on his hands. While Angoua likely represents the short-term center back partner for Antonio Delamea, Smith used Sunday’s match to petition for more minutes in Angoua’s place.
Can Smith unseat the Ligue 1 loanee as a top-choice center back?
