Boston Breakers sign GK Sammy Jo Prudhomme

Prudhomme replaces the injured Libby Stout.

The Boston Breakers have signed goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme in the wake of a preseason injury to starting keeper Libby Stout.

Prudhomme was selected #31 overall by Boston in the 2017 NWSL College Draft. At the time fans wondered if perhaps this was an insurance pick as 2016 second goalkeeper Abby Smith is coming back from a season-ending knee injury. But then the team announced Stout would be out four to six weeks with an ankle injury back in early March. So now at the very least Boston has someone immediately ready to step into that slot, someone who has been regularly training with the team during preseason and won’t need as much time to integrate as a completely fresh keeper.

Prudhomme is 5’10” and coming off a national championship at USC, which she helped earn alongside fellow Breakers teammate Morgan Andrews. She had a .906 save percentage at USC and was the 2016 Pac-12 goalkeeper of the year. Will she actually see any time on the field or force her way into the roster on a more permanent basis? Barring a sudden loss of form from Stout, Prudhomme is probably fighting Abby Smith for that slot. As per team and league policy, terms of her contract were not disclosed, but Prudhomme probably knows that she has a limited window to show her value to Matt Beard before Stout heals and returns to the roster.

The Breakers kick off the season away at FC Kansas City at 6 PM ET on April 16.
