For the first time since Matt Reis retired at the end of the 2013 season, the New England Revolution will have a player wearing the number one.

Newcomer Cody Cropper, who signed with the Revolution on Thursday, has decided to make the number his. While the number one has long been associated with goalkeepers, Bobby Shuttleworth, Brad Knighton, and Matt Turner has opted to wear 22, 18, and 30, respectively.

When Shuttleworth initially signed with the Revs in 2009, he wore the number 34. He later switched to 22 because he “wanted to move into something a little bit lower.” When he became the first-choice netminder in 2014, Shuttleworth didn’t make a switch, stating that he’s “kind of settled.”

Cropper was spotting wearing the number one during Thursday’s practice and it has to be said that the 23-year-old looked pretty good while mugging for the camera with defensive teammate Andrew Farrell.
