Whitney Engen called up for USWNT training camp

Engen will join a roster of 23 other players to train for the upcoming friendly against South Africa

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

Whitney Engen has been called up to the national team as part of a 24-player training camp roster ahead of their July 9 friendly against South Africa.

She's currently duking it out with Emily Sonnett to see who will go as a third center back to the Rio Olympics, assuming Ellis only takes three center backs (with such tight roster constraints, it's hard to see any other roster configuration).

Players are expected to enter camp July 1, which means they'll be away from their clubs that weekend. Engen will miss the Breakers' away game against Seattle, as well as their away game against Orlando.

Things tend not to go well without Engen anchoring the back line, as we saw with their 4-0 defeat to the WNY Flash while she was gone. Hopefully the Breakers have a plan in place to compensate for her absence.

USA vs South Africa will air at 1 PM ET on Saturday, July 9 on FS1.
