Some MLS players don't know Caldwell's name but still think he's good

Scott Caldwell is being recognized as one of the most underrated players in MLS.

MLSSoccer.com recently released an article trying tto pinpoint the league's most underrated player. Vancouver Whitecaps' Steven Beitashour and Orlando City's Cristian Higuita were nominated, as was the New England Revolution's Scott Caldwell.

The recognition isn't surprising as Caldwell's contributions have long been underappreciated nationally. Locally, the Massachusetts native is adored by fans and teammates. In fact, Caldwell was named as both the Players' Player and Team MVP in 2015.

In the MLSSoccer.com article, writer Sam Stejskal states that Caldwell "excels at doing the simple things right" and "gives New England's most skilled players the freedom to do their thing."

While everything Stejskal says is true, the most interesting tidbit actually comes from the comments section.

MLS Vice President of Digital Content Jason Saghini wrote: "I asked this question to a bunch of the players at a media tour last year and the one that came up the most by far was Scott Caldwell... although a few of the players didn't know his name. 'The little guy in the middle next to Jermaine Jones.'"

With Jones gone, maybe more players will learn Caldwell's name.
