Newcomers Sambinha and Gershon Koffie are officially with the New England Revolution as the team prepares for the Desert Diamond Cup.
Both players were outfitted with Revolution gear ahead of Monday's practice in Tucson, AZ. Sambhina was spotted wearing the no. 40 while Koffie went with the no. 7. Sambinha wore the same number during his time with Sporting B. Koffie, however, went with something new after previously donning the no. 28 while with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
With less than a month until first kick, it will be interesting to see how both players are integrated into the team. Sambinha is expected to compete with Andrew Farrell and Jose Goncalves for starting minutes. Koffie could have an easier path to the starting XI, possibly slotting in next to Scott Caldwell. Koffie's competition comes in the form of Daigo Kobayashi, Zachary Herivaux, and Steve Neumann.
Before either player gets into the starting lineup, they must first get up to speed in terms of tactics and fitness. Koffie has a heads up on the latter, according to head coach Jay Heaps, because Sambinha wasn't able to train with a team while awaiting his visa and international transfer certificate.
The Revs begin Desert Diamond Cup play on Wednesday with a game against Real Salt Lake. Kickoff is set for 10:30 PM EST.
