There are few acts more despicable in soccer than spitting on an opponent, which is why Cristian Maidana was rightfully shown a red card on Saturday night.
In a play shrouded in mystery, Maidana was ejected by referee Chris Penso during stoppage time of the game between the Philadelphia Union and New England Revolution. The presence of a red card seemed harsh initially as Maidana took down Nguyen in a fairly routine foul. The replay brought clarity to the situation as the Philadelphia midfielder was seen spitting on Lee Nguyen.
It was clearly a moment of frustration as the Revs were leading 1-0 at the time. The result all but assured that the Union won't make the post-season as the club currently sits in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
Maidana will automatically miss next weekend's clash against the San Jose Earthquakes. It wouldn't be surprising, however, if the MLS Disciplinary Committee decides to tack on more games.
