Will Packwood doesn't have a team, but that hasn't prevented him from getting called into camp for the U.S. U-23 national team.
Head coach Andi Herzog has named a 24-man roster ahead of friendlies against England (Sept. 3) and Qatar (Sept. 8). Among expected names like Rubio Rubin, Gedion Zelalem, and Emerson Hundman is Packwood.
The 22-year-old defender is the only called-up player that's currently without a team. Packwood was most recently with Championship side Birmingham City but parted with the club in early May. Since then, the Massachusetts native has bounced around MLS, spending with the New England Revolution, Chicago Fire, and New York Red Bulls.
Packwood has recently been a regular participate in Revolution training, but the club doesn't appear to have any interest in signing the local product. In mid-May, general manager Michael Burns stated that Packwood was no longer a target.
It will be interesting to see what happens to Packwood's stock if he does play in the upcoming friendlies. While his past has been injury-plagued, a couple of good performances could help his search for a new team.
