The U.S. Women’s National Team is looking to finish atop Group D as the knockout round looms. In order to do this, they will need a favorable result against Nigeria on Tuesday night.
The USWNT opened the World Cup with a 3-1 win against Australia on Monday, June 8. Their second match was a 0-0 draw against Sweden on Friday, June 12. Neither game evoked much confidence for Jill Ellis’ women, which increases the importance of Tuesday’s group play finale.
That said, a win against Nigeria, who are at the bottom of the group, will guarantee first place for the Americans. The U.S. could also finish in the top slot with a draw if Australia v Sweden is a tie, Sweden beats Australia by one goal, or Sweden beats Australia by two goals, but the U.S. scores more goals than Sweden.
Join us as we breakdown the play of Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, and the rest of the USWNT.
