The MLS Disciplinary Committee has issued a warning about mass confrontation to both the New England Revolution and Columbus Crew SC for an incident that happened on Saturday, Mar. 11.
The moment in question came in the 63rd minute after Tony Tchani was whistled for a foul on Lee Nguyen. The Crew SC midfielder was cautioned, but before the free kick could be taken both teams began to bicker in front of referee Silviu Petrescu.
Since this is the first infraction for both teams, no further discipline will be enacted beyond the official warning. If either team violates the policy again, a fine could be in order.
The "mass confrontation" rule was put in place by MLS in 2013. Since then, several teams have been warned and fined. On Oct. 15, 2013, the Disciplinary Committee fined the Seattle Sounders $5,000 and coach Sigi Schmid an additional $1,000 for breaking the rule.
