New England Revolution midfielder/defender Donnie Smith will be sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks after undergoing a procedure meant to repair a left groin injury that occurred during practice.
Smith, who was re-signed at the start of preseason, looked set to continue his transition to the back line. The left-footed player saw minutes at both right and left back before suffering this injury.
This upcoming season will mark Smith's third with the club after being drafted 21st overall by the Revs at the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Smith has only made two regular season appearances since leaving the University of North Carolina, his first coming in the 2013 season opener against the Chicago Fire and the second being played against the Philadelphia Union in 2014.
While Smith recovers, the Revolution will have one less defensive option. Chris Tierney is the incumbent at left back with Kevin Alston and Darrius Barnes providing cover. Draftee Marco Fenulus, who is currently unsigned, also appears to be a candidate as the third-round pick played there this preseason.
