After spending four years with the New England Revolution, Stephen McCarthy has relocated to Finland to play with Kuopion Palloseura, better known as KuPS.
McCarthy joined KuPS on trial in mid-January and participated in a pair of exhibition games. On Friday, Jan. 30, the defender signed a one-year contract with the team.
McCarthy, who was originally classified as a defensive midfielder when he joined MLS in 2011, transitioned to center back during his sophomore campaign under the tutelage of coach Jay Heaps. In his first year in the position, McCarthy was recognized as the team's Best Defender. It appears that McCarthy will continue to be used as a center back with KuPS.
McCarthy fell out of favor in 2014 as he only made one regular season appearance, going 90 minutes in a 2-0 loss against FC Dallas. The 26-year-old was not extended a bona fide offer at the end of the season, which allowed him to explore other options.
McCarthy joins Saer Sene and Geoffrey Castillion as former Revolution players that have found a home in Europe.
