It didn't take long for Real Salt Lake to gain the lead over the New England Revolution as Devon Sandoval scored a penalty kick in the sixth minute.

Referee Baldomero Toledo pointed to the spot after Darrius Barnes was ruled to have committed a foul on John Stertzer. The ensuing penalty kick was well taken as it beat Bobby Shuttleworth despite the goalkeeper guessing correctly. The goal would be an important one as RSL held the advantage heading into halftime.
The Revs and RSL have already met once this preseason with New England winning that 80-minute scrimmage 2-1. On that night, Charlie Davies and Sean Okoli had goals. The Salt Lake tally came from Sebastian Jaime.
