Boston Breakers midfielder Suzane Pires has been called up to Portugal's national team for the first time.
Pires will join Portugal's camp ahead of their game against Republic of Ireland as they attempt to qualify for the 2017 UEFA Women's Euro. The game will be October 27 at Estádio Comendador Joaquim de Almeida Freitas in Moreira de Cónegos, Portugal. Portugal is in Group 2 with Finland, Montenegro, Republic of Ireland, and Spain. Portugal currently ranks #39 in FIFA's international rankings and has never qualified for the Euro before.
There are eight groups of five sides each; each group winner and the six best runners-up will go on to compete in the final tournament. Host Netherlands and the winner of a playoff between the other two runners-up will complete the field of 16 teams.
Pires had 12 caps for Boston in her rookie season and registered one assist in a home game against the Seattle Reign on August 1. If Pires shows well, she could possibly expect another callup for the Algarve Cup, which is hosted by Portugal every year around early March.
