Breakers Transfers 2014: Boston Waives Defender Jazmyne Avant

The Breakers thinnest--and weakest--position just got thinner (and weaker), as the team waived one-time starter Jazmyne Avant.

In a surprise move, the Breakers have parted ways with wing back Jazmyne Avant, who started 20 matches in two partial seasons with the team.

For the better part of 2014, Avant used her speed to track back with forwards and shutdown wide midfielders, logging 778 productive minutes in 12 appearances (nine starts). In recent weeks, however, Avant has fallen out of Tom Durkin's plans, making way for a revolving cast of defenders--including veteran attacker Heather O'Reilly. She last appeared on July 2 during a start against Washington; the Breakers waived Avant on Thursday afternoon.

"We would like to thank Jazmyne for everything she contributed during her time as a Boston Breaker," general manager Lee Billiard said. "We wish her all the best in her future soccer career."

In June 2013, Billiard signed Avant after a failed stint with eventual champion Portland. The pacey defender went on to start all of her 11 matches, earning our very own "Unsung Hero" award for her providing "unforeseen value."

This season, Avant featured for the league's worst defense, though her individual play appeared on pace with her 2013 productivity. Cutting ties with Avant seemingly spells doom for the Breakers back four, as the team must now feature Rachel Wood--a recently-signed Reserve Player--or continue to draw back natural midfielder Nikki Washington or natural forward Mollie Pathman.

With depth serving as a major concern for the majority of the past two seasons, Avant's departure raises significant questions about the state of the front office and the future of this team. Until Billiard follows up with a relevant signing, this move will forever cause Breakers supporters to scratch their collective head.

Stay tuned for in-depth analysis as the 2014 season continues.
