After her three-goal, one-assist performance helped the Breakers take down the defending champion Portland Thorns, Breakers rookie Jazmine Reeves earned NWSL Player of the Week Honors. Reeves, 22, netted the first hat-trick of the 2014 NWSL season on Wednesday, when the Virgina Tech standout and her fellow reserves routed Portland, 4-1.
In the second minute of Wednesday's east-west matchup, Reeves made early work of Thorns ‘keeper Nadine Angerer, sending a daunting cross onto the foot of forward Nkem Ezurike. The Michigan product finished the cross with ease.
In the 25th minute, Reeves netted the first goal of her NWSL career, following up a shot from forward Courtney Jones in front of goal. Twenty minutes later, Reeves struck again, skillfully chipping an onrushing Angerer from just inside the box. The rookie completed her wonder-day in the 59th minute, when she deftly trapped a lofting through ball from midfielder Maddie Evans, cut inside her defender, and curled a left-footed shot just inside the far post.
Reeves represents the second Breakers attacker to earn 2014 Player of the Week Honors, following in the footsteps of midfielder Lianne Sanderson, who earned recognition following a two-goal, one-assist performance in week three.
