New England Sends Donnie Smith to Rochester for Second Loan Spell

Donnie Smith will rejoin the Rochester Rhinos for a short-term loan ahead of their game against the Richmond Kickers.

Per a club release, the New England Revolution have announced that they've loaned midfielder/defender Donnie Smith to their USL Pro affiliate, the Rochester Rhinos. The release states that Smith is expected to return to Foxboro after Friday's game against the Richmond Kickers.

This is Smith's second short-term loan as he was previously in Rochester from April 27 to May 3. During this time, the sophomore made three appearances. In his two years with the Revs, Smith has made two first team starts with the most recent coming on March 15, 2014 against the Philadelphia Union.

The loan is particularly interesting because the Rhinos will be facing the Kickers, who the Revolution will square off against in the fourth round of the US Open Cup on June 18th. The game will also be occurring during a busy stretch for the Rhinos as they played midweek and have fixtures on Friday and Sunday.

Since being signed in 2013, Smith has seen time as both a midfielder and defender. Last year Smith started and played 52 minutes as left back in the third round of the US Open Cup. Smith also logged significant minutes as a defender during preseason.

The loan will reunite Smith with defender Jossimar Sanchez, goalkeeper Luis Soffner and midfielder Alec Sundly, all of whom are on long-term loan.
