Although he wasn’t able to get onto the score sheet, New England Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez did help the Uruguay U-20s collect a 5-2 win over club team Lavalleja on Tuesday.

The U-20s participated in two hour-long exhibitions against Lavalleja. The first game, which didn’t include Fagundez, ended scoreless. The second, which had Fagundez in the starting lineup, ended in a definitive victory for the Uruguayans.

Tuesday's goals came from Gaston Pereiro, Franco Acosta, Mauro Arambarri (2) and Franco Pizzichilo. Two days earlier, Fagundez played a role in all three of Uruguay's goals against local side Colonia, scoring one and assisting on the others.

On Friday, head coach Fabian Coito is expected to trim his preliminary 30-man roster to 23 ahead of the South American Youth Championship, which will take place from Jan. 14 to Feb. 7.

Coito’s announcement could bring clarity to Fagundez’s international future. If the teenager makes the final roster and plays in the tournament, he would forever be tied to Uruguay since he's not currently a US citizen. Fagundez, who has expressed interest in playing for the US National Team in the past, recently hinted that he may choose to play with his birth country.
