It looks like A.J. Soares will soon be playing in Serie A.
Jimmy Conrad of KickTV, who also broke the news that Soares was exploring European options, revealed today that the center back will soon be joining Italian club Hellas Verona. As has become the trend, Conrad used Twitter to inform the public of the impending move:
Congrats to @AjSoares and his agent @mikegartlan for wheeling and dealing a move to Hellas Verona and the Serie A! Buona fortuna, my friend!
— Jimmy Conrad (@JimmyConrad) December 15, 2014
Verona currently sits 13th in the Serie A standings with an overall record of 4-5-6. Soares will hope to help the team, who presently has a goal differential of -8 with 26 goals allowed in 15 games. Interestingly, Verona also employees Mexican international defender Rafa Marquez, who played with the New York Red Bulls from 2010-2012.
Soares' move will greatly affect the New England Revolution as he was one of the team's most important defenders. In fact, Soares collected two 2014 team awards: Defender of the Year and Players' Player. It will be interesting to see if the Revs look to sign an outsider as a replacement or if they decide to move Andrew Farrell or Darrius Barnes to the middle.
