When you’re a MLS MVP candidate who just made his re-debut with the US national team, you’re bound to draw some attention from European clubs. This is apparently the case for Lee Nguyen as the infamous MLS Transfers twitter account reported the following:
Big news: Source says Fulham reps flying into Boston today "to assess Lee Nguyen" Southampton viewed him last week at RBA. #NERevs #MLS
— MLS Transfers (@MLSTransfers) November 28, 2014
It wouldn’t be surprising if Nguyen is attracting suitors from abroad. Nguyen was the highest scoring American in MLS this season. Furthermore, his 18 goals made him the highest scoring midfielder in league history.
Personnel from Fulham got to see Nguyen’s talents firsthand as he played 12 minutes against Colombia at Craven Cottage. Fulham could certainly use the creative mind of Nguyen to help run their midfield as the team sits 17th in the Championship. Although Americans have long had success at Fulham, it might be best for Nguyen to set his ambitions higher.
Southampton, currently 2nd in the English Premier League, would be a quite a challenge for Nguyen. Heading to such a successful club would likely bring a big payday, but would it ensure the playing time that Nguyen needs?
It should also be noted that "MLS Transfers" has been hot and cold when it comes to rumors. In fact, they often provide rumors without much substantiated evidence. I have no doubt that foreign teams are looking at Nguyen, but I have no idea who or if the New England Revolution would listen. Remember, Nguyen signed a new contract at the beginning of the season and from all accounts he’s enjoying life in the area.
