World soccer fans have been following the Confederations Cup for the past few weeks, with Brazil retaining its title for the third consecutive year. Now, New England area soccer fans will be able to see Neymar and World Cup hosts Brazil up close and personal.
Brazil will square off against Portugal in an international friendly on September 10th at Gillette Stadium. The match will take place during an official FIFA international fixture date and both rosters will be full of top players.
"We’re very excited to be able to present this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fans in our region who care so deeply about these two legendary national teams," Revolution president Brian Bilello said. "Being able to host this match during an official FIFA window, and therefore attracting the top squads from both countries – and some of the world’s top players – means this will be a truly memorable event for everyone in attendance."
Brazil, fresh off it's 3-0 defeat of Spain in the 2013 Confederations Cup final, will have a roster featuring recent Barcelona FC signing Neymar as well as stars Hulk, Fred, Thiago Silva and David Luiz.
"We are thrilled to return to Gillette Stadium and the greater Boston area," Brazil Federation President Jose Maria Marin said. "The opportunity to play against a world-class opponent in Portugal is an exciting opportunity and we look forward to once again playing in front of our passionate fans living in the Boston area."
"It is always a thrill to come to the United States and I am very happy to play against Portugal in Boston at Gillette Stadium on September 10," Brazil forward Neymar said. "The Boston-area has a very large Brazilian population and I invite all of our fans in the United States to come out and enjoy the match."
Sixth ranked Portugal will not be an easy opponent. They feature another of the world's best in Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Nani, Pepe, Bruno Alves and Helder Postiga. Portugal currently sit atop their UEFA qualifying group and will play Northern Ireland on September 6th in Belfast before coming to Foxborough.
Tickets for the match start at $50 and will be on sale for the general public at 10 a.m. on Friday July 19th. Revolution season ticket holders and multi-game package holders will be able to purchase tickets in advance during a series of private pre-sales starting at 10 a.m on Tuesday July 9th.
On September 10th the gates at Gillette Stadium will open at 6:30 p.m. and parking lots will open at 4:30 p.m. Gillette Stadium parking charges will apply to all fans.
