Revolution 1, Union 2: Player Ratings and Man of the Match

After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Corey Major, Matty Jollie, Abram Chamberlain, and Brendan Schimmel. Steve Stoehr had to sit this one out.

Matt Reis: Average Rating - 4.625 (Corey 5, Matty 4.5, Abram 5, Brendan 4)

Corey: Had some good saves but also showed his biggest weakness, his aerial presence...Matty: Aerial deficiencies once again at the forefront of another Revs loss...Abram: Not really sure how he didn't save the penalty. While really not a terrible game, it was just sort of average...Brendan: Bobby Shuttleworth hasn't been beaten on crosses late in the game. Great jump on the PK, perplexing how it wasn't saved.

Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 5.125 (Corey 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)

Corey: I thought Chris had a fine game. His service looked decent, at least much better than Benny's. Still think he's at his best when he has Lee to partner with on the left...Matty: Good service on the night I thought. His improved positioning is helping his defense...Abram: No assists, didn't get killed by deep poor positioning...Brendan: Was cut up once or twice on the outside but besides that a consistent Tierney like performance.

A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 4.75 (Corey 5, Matty 4.5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 5)

Corey: Tough game for AJ, being banged up and all. Average performance overall...Matty: Got roughed up pretty good, too many needless dumb fouls while on a yellow...Abram: Poor yellow card early on, got the living daylights beat out of him...Brendan: Sucks to see your first foul be a yellow...but hey.

Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 5.75 (Corey 6, Matty 5.5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 6)

Corey: Best game of anyone on the back-line...Matty: Revs best defensive performance...Abram: Above average, performance, some beautiful tackling and his yellow was garbage...Brendan: Sucks even more when both your CBs are carrying yellows. Macca is putting in beast like performances.

Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 3.375 (Corey 3, Matty 3, Abram 3.5, Brendan 4)

Corey: Worst game of the season...Matty: Controversial or not, that's a terrible foul in a bad area...Abram: The foul he gave up is given up dozens of time in that same spot, too bad it was magically a PK in this one. Still, needs to do better going forward...Brendan: Pretty good distribution stats. Not ready to crucify him on going forward. Jay Heaps may be asking him to do so. Seems like he wants a goal. FK on the 18 yd line and PK because of a foul on the 17 yd like both suck. Also he had no idea on the McInerney goal who was behind him.

Kelyn Rowe: Average Rating - 5.25 (Corey 6, Matty 5.5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 4)

Corey: Gets a 6 for improved play. He basically made the goal happen. Looked grittier than he usually does, but still needs to stop disappearing. Also should have picked his head up and put away that goal...Matty: Better performance for Kelyn on the whole. Good creativity, need to finish chances...Abram: Decent performance from Rowe, if he finishes his chance, which was not an easy one, this easily becomes a 6...Brendan: Rookie mistake on his breakaway near miss. Had plenty of time to pick his head up and take a look. Least amount of total touches for the starters.

Clyde Simms: Average Rating - 5.125 (Corey 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)

Corey: I thought he did fine out there, but apparently Jay did not...Matty: Average Simms performance...Abram: It's what he does...Brendan: Please get healthy?

Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 5.125 (Corey 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 5.5)

Corey: Could stand to be a bit more selfish on the attack. Not quite as involved as he usually is, but I do like him in that CAM position...Matty: Saw how his move towards the center put a little more pressure on him to create for others, instead of himself...Abram: I prefer him centrally, that said he was not nearly selfish enough this game...Brendan: Threatening on the ball just never really had inside the 18.

Benny Feilhaber: Average Rating - 4.375 (Corey 4, Matty 4.5, Abram 4, Brendan 5)

Corey: Need so much more from Benny. How long have we been saying that he needs to step it up? He was ball-watching way too often. Didn't get involved in the attack till the end. Passes were good, but the expectation is much higher from him...Matty: Felt like this was one of those pouty games from Benny. Spectator far too often, didn't really see him try to create aggressively until the latter stages...Abram: At what point do we say his salary does not match his output?...Brendan: Moments of class. Kind of gets stuck in scrimmage mode/pace at times. We all just want more of the good from Benny. Great through balls per usual. Just give me one huge F U Klinsmann type performance ya know?

Saer Sene: Average Rating - 5.75 (Corey 5.5, Matty 6, Abram 6, Brendan 5.5)

Corey: As Brian O'Connell said in our Live Game Thread, this was probably his best game out on the right wing all year. Looked hungry for goals which was a nice change. But he's easily the most frustrating dude ever in the box. Needs to think quicker. WAY quicker...Matty: Never been a fan of playing a player on his opposite side and making him cut in (a la Arjen Robben) because it makes player too predictable. However, one his finer performances in recent matches, hopefully the goal will provide a spark...Abram: The miss on the one-on-one with Zack MacMath was bad, but this was the best game from Sene in awhile, maybe the best of the season. He still needs a right foot, but we know that at this point...Brendan: Gorgeous goal. Too selfish afterwards. Missed an open Ryan Guy for a sure goal and other times a lay off could have been a better chance. Goal is padding this rating.

Ryan Guy: Average Rating - 5.5 (Corey 5.5, Matty 5.5, Abram 5, Brendan 6)

Corey: I like when Ryan is out on the field because I think he makes us better. But unfortunately he had a relatively average performance...Matty: He's not a true target striker, but I like what Ryan brings to the field...Abram: Constantly moving, holds the ball well, that said I can't wait until he is out of that pseudo target forward position...Brendan: American Cardenas style play.

Shalrie Joseph (sub): Average Rating - 4.375 (Corey 4.5, Matty 5, Abram 4, Brendan 4)

Corey: Slow and largely ineffective...Matty: A tad slow off the bench, couldn't seem to adjust to the game off the bench...Abram: Moved slowly, needed to finish his chip. First time I've questioned his signing as a DP...Brendan: Playing hurt? DP contract awarding past merit? Rest him now Jay we'll need him come Sep/Oct. Since when does SJ21 miss that chip?

Dimitry Imbongo (sub): Average Rating - 3.75 (Corey 3.5, Matty 4, Abram 4, Brendan 3.5)

Corey: Not a good debut for the newbie, but not ready to call him a flop yet by any means. MLS takes some time to adapt. He clearly wasn't ready for it...Matty: Welcome to MLS...Abram: Probably wasn't the ideal game to bring him in. Personally feel that Diego would have been the better sub. Ideally it is Jose Moreno making an appearance there...Brendan: Younger, faster, better Pepe Moreno. Maybe not the best position to debut the man. We needed a touch of class finishing, Fernando does that.

Darrius Barnes (sub): Average Rating - 5.375 (Corey 5, Matty 5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 6.5)

Corey: Not bad...Matty: Pleased with the progress Darrius has made. I see more minutes for him in the future...Abram: Barnes has been pleasantly surprising me this season...Brendan: Keep it going. Good to have reliable CB depth, AJ and Macca are abusing their bodies. Come the Fall...a solid Barnes will be necessary.
