After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Steve Stoehr, Corey Major, and Matty Jollie. Abram Chamberlain and Brendan Schimmel are sitting this week out.
Matt Reis: Average Rating - 6.5 (Steve 6, Corey 7.5, Matty 6)
Steve: Positioning better, made some good saves, but got lucky with Fire's profligacy in front of goal, too...Corey: Big points for the beist. Critical saves kept Chi off the board. Also the post twice...Matty: One big save, two more by the post. More decisive on set pieces.
Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 5.3 (Steve 5, Corey 5.5, Matty 5.5)
Steve: Thoroughly average night. Service off, but not too many mistakes, either...Corey: Nothing spectacular from CT. Service was kinda crappy in this one. Defensively did alright though...Matty: He gets the half point for some decent service, but he needs to stop giving the ball away down his flank.
A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 7 (Steve 7, Corey 7, Matty 7)
Steve: Stood tall and steady at the back, as usual...Corey: Knows what he did right, knows what he did wrong. Solid outing...Matty: Beast mode, good leadership, set pieces were better. Still gets beat on headers too often.
Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 6.3 (Steve 6.5, Corey 6.5, Matty 6)
Steve: Well-positioned, good tackling, one or two shaky passes but got it under control...Corey: Made us sweat a few times. Still a little too panicky when the pressure is on, leads to errant passes...Matty: Please be more careful with passes out of the back. I'd prefer a long boot upfield to a poor pass.
Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 6.16 (Steve 5.5, Corey 6.5, Matty 6.5)
Steve: Improving on both sides of the ball, but still relies heavily on speed to make up for positioning mistakes...Corey: Did better on the attack in this one and still showing that he is much improved on defense. Needs to work on crossing into the box better though...Matty: Every game he gets a little better. Crosses getting better, defensive responsibilities were his priorities.
Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 6.6 (Steve 6.5, Corey 6.5, Matty 7)
Steve: Didn't get on the scoresheet, but dribbling and passing down the left were great all night...Corey: Played significant minutes against both DC and Harrisburg. Still looked like a boss out there. If he was at all tired, he didn't show it...Matty: Even his team mates lauded his play on twitter post-game. Great dribbling skills created lots of space and chances. Sooner or later, they'll result in goals.
Shalrie Joseph: Average Rating - 7 (Steve 7, Corey 7, Matty 7)
Steve: At his best when asked to sit deep and be the midfield lynchpin, good on the ball, maintained possession...Corey: I prefer him at CDM soooo much more than the CAM he is usually out there as...Matty: Amazing how much better he looks in his proper position.
Benny Feilhaber: Average Rating - 8 (Steve 8, Corey 8, Matty 8)
Steve: Needed to have a breakout game, and he had it. Hungry and dangerous all night...Corey: Hell yeah. Great game. Know why? Played in the middle where he plays best...Matty: Nobody rags on Benny more than me, but I've also said at his best he's one of the best midfielders in MLS. Great game from Benny.
Fernando Cardenas: Average Rating - 5.16 (Steve 4.5, Corey 5.5, Matty 5.5)
Steve: Lively, exciting, but ultimately detrimental with poor decisions and bad passes. Maybe overtired...Corey: His craftiness was overshadowed by his poor decisions, poor passing, and defensive lapses...Matty: Looked like he was caught between two minds all night. Almost too unselfish.
Saer Sene: Average Rating - 5.6 (Steve 6, Corey 6, Matty 5)
Steve: Slicker passing, should have had an assist, had one or two good chances, overall good game...Corey: off game. Didn't look hungry for a goal until the last 10 minutes. Expect more...Matty: Average night for the Frenchman when we've grown so accustomed to the extraordinary. He did attempt a shot right footed though. Baby steps.
Jose Moreno: Average Rating - 5.83 (Steve 5.5, Corey 6.5, Matty 5.5)
Steve: Had desire, looked healthy, some good touches and passes, but overall needs to be more dangerous...Corey: Not too shabby. Did a lot of work. Would like to see him make more out of his efforts...Matty: While others see little, I see good, strong hold-up play and a smart eye. His work rate was MUCH better also. Looking slimmer, quicker.
Kelyn Rowe (sub): Average Rating - 8.5 (Steve 8, Corey 9, Matty 8.5)
Steve: Nearly scored with his first touch, completely changed the game and picked up a goal and an assist within his first ten minutes of action. ‘Nuff said...Corey: Welcome back, buddy...Matty: The super sub! Goal and an assist. Did the benching have a little to do with it? Give him time to reflect and learn? Certainly seemed that way.
Blake Brettschneider (sub): Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Corey 5, Matty 5)
Steve: Not the best chance for him to make an impact. All effort, could have done better with his touches...Corey: Kind of a flop. Runstrom please?...Matty: Typical BB performance. All the dirty work, flick on headers, hold up play, track back WELL into the defensive third to help out.
