After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Steve Stoehr, Matty Jollie, Abram Chamberlain, and Brendan Schimmel. Corey Major is sitting this one out.
Matt Reis: Average Rating - 4.75 (Steve 5, Matty 4.5, Abram 5, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Horrendous miscommunication on first goal, but recovered later. Made some good saves...Matty: Still too hesitant coming off his line sometimes. Is that due to poor communication?...Abram: great coming off the line late in the first to stop what should have clearly been a TFC goal, but ironically was also timid coming off his line to stop Danny Koevermans' 4th minute goal...Brendan: Chaotic management of his box in the first half led to far too many chances and his hesitation coming out caused Soares to stop trailing Koevermans.
Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 4.5 (Steve 4, Matty 5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Torched by Morgan in the first half. Silly yellow card, but was decent going forward until injured...Matty: Average effort, worried the evil hammy might be rearing its ugly head...Abram: Passing was good, picked up a poor yellow card, left injured. Need better from Kevin...Brendan: 60% passing not great. Early exit, worried this hammy might remove one of our only speed threats.
A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 4.25 (Steve 4, Matty 4.5, Abram 4, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: A 4 may be generous. Could have stopped both goals. Miscommunication with others a factor, but AJ is the common denominator in both mistakes...Matty: Saw what I feared most: AJ not being physically imposing enough against strong strikers. Koevermans won the physical battle handily...Abram: Possibly his worst performance of the year. Was out-muscled by Koevermans on the first goal, and lost his mark on the second one...Brendan: Terrible first half, thought Heaps should have put Lozano in to send a message, second half better. On the hook for both goals and the second he was flat footed and lazy. TFC wanted it more.
Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 6.125 (Steve 5.5, Matty 6.5, Abram 6.5, Brendan 6)
Steve: Tall and strong all game, nearly scored, overall a pretty solid performance. Might have done better on second TFC goal, though...Matty: Good, solid effort, as Macca is really developing into a solid CB...Abram: Another strong defensive performance from McCarthy who is coming into his own as a CB. Also displayed his midfield skills with a near miss late in the first half...Brendan: Played big in both boxes and seemed to be the only Revs player who could win a header.
Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 6.375 (Steve 7, Matty 6, Abram 6, Brendan 6.5)
Steve: The goal gets him the rating. Also, great free kick to force a Kocic save, and 81.6% pass completion isn't too shabby, either...Matty: You see how much the team misses his great service on set pieces. Makes a huge difference. Massive goal...Abram: Great service on his free kicks - which had been missing for a few games - positioned himself well to compensate for his own lack of speed. Oh yeah, the goal was good too...Brendan: Great passing rating, tons of touches, great set piece and great goal.
Kelyn Rowe: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Matty 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: Balanced moments of greatness with moments of invisibility...Matty: Anyone feel like he was performing a magic act out there? First you saw him dazzling everyone, and then he'd disappear...Abram: At times invisible, at times the best player on the pitch. Like him taking players one, but sometimes needs to pass as opposed to shooting every time...Brendan: Plenty of great balls in the first half, after Simms came out appeared to settle in a CDM role. Outsized with a lot of balls in the air.
Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 5.25 (Steve 5.5, Matty 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5.5)
Steve: Phenomenal passing, tracked back well, looked good in midfield, but where's the production?...Matty: His passing numbers were astounding on the night, but he seems to shrink when he gets closer to the box. Almost like he shies away from dirty work...Abram: Very good in the midfield and on defense, seemed to vanish within the offensive third. I'm still awaiting anther Vancouver-like offensive explosion from him. Needs to be stronger on the ball...Brendan: 51 of 56 passing. Good movement on ball never seemed to have inside the 18'.
Benny Feilhaber: Average Rating - 6.75 (Steve 7, Matty 6.5, Abram 7, Brendan 6.5)
Steve: Unlucky not to score or get an assist, passing was dangerous all night. Good performance. Matty: Benny has really stepped it up and I couldn't be happier for the guy. Opened up play repeatedly, his distribution was good, and his skill with shooting has certainly shined through...Abram: When everyone is back to full health, Benny needs to stay as a CAM. Unlocked the defense numerous times, created the Brettschneider goal through his shot, could've had a goal of his own if not for a great Milos Kocic save...Brendan: Some confusingly bad giveaways by Feilhaber brought him from a 7 to 6.5, other than that excellent second half, great composure in tight spaces.
Clyde Simms: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 5, Matty 5, Abram 5, Brendan 5)
Steve: The rust was obvious, but still did his work. Good to have him back...Matty: Classic Simms: you don't really hear his name often, which means our smooth CDM is back...Abram: A serviceable return from injury...Brendan: Average return game for Clyde. Simple smart distribution. Most of TFC's attack seemed to from the wings away from Simms.
Diego Fagundez: Average Rating - 4.625 (Steve 5.5, Matty 4.5, Abram 4.5, Brendan 4)
Steve: Didn't get a lot of the ball, but looked dangerous whenever he did. Couple slick passes and one good shot...Matty: Not a starter, still too young, too small...Abram: I don't think Diego is a starter, that said he had a stronger game than Sene...Brendan: One good attempt on net for Diego, didn't have the size to beat anyone one on one and he and Sene tried to get too cute at times.
Saer Sene: Average Rating - 4 (Steve 3.5, Matty 4, Abram 4, Brendan 4.5)
Steve: Looked lazy, lethargic, disinterested, disconnected. Needed to do better on his open chance, put it on frame or lay it to Blake...Matty: Not a target striker. How many times do we have to say that? The secret is out there: Sene is left footed...Abram: Sene was miscast in a more target role this week; he is not a target forward. And, as I always say, needs to work on his right. Should have finished his one-on-one with Kocic and the early Benny to Diego to him buildup. Defenses are pushing him to his right and out muscling him...Brendan: Please work on the right foot. Please. If he is strong on the left, let him play RW so he can come in on it, he ends pushing wide to his left and reducing his angle making it easier to save. Sene seemed to be one-touching the ball back whenever he got it when he clearly had to time turn on the ball and make chances.
Florian Lechner (sub): Average Rating - 6.375 (Steve 6.5, Matty 6.5, Abram 6.5, Brendan 6)
Steve: Morgan beat him on goal 2, but after that, dominated the right flank offensively and defensively...Matty: Were we a bit too quick to write him off after his first poor performance? Showed the whole package: passing, positioning, defending...Abram: I was worried when he came in, great passing, good defending, great positioning. Could he push Alston?...Brendan: TFC didn't try to abuse his lack of speed for some reason, which let him come forward and make some good runs and put some good balls in play.
Blake Brettschneider (sub): Average Rating - 6.375 (Steve 7, Matty 6, Abram 6, Brendan 6.5)
Steve: When a striker scores, he does his job. Also made smarter runs, and probably would have scored again if Sene laid off to him late in the match...Matty: Exhibited exactly what I love about him: hungry, gritty, determined play...Abram: Created havoc and scored the first Revs goal off the long Feilhaber shot...Brendan: Just when you think he's a one hit wonder...scrappy goal hungry stuff from Brett. Mr. Moreno may want to start looking at flights to Colombia.
Fernando Cardenas (sub): Average Rating - 5.875 (Steve 6, Matty 5.5, Abram 5.5, Brendan 6.5)
Steve: One of his best recent performances. Fast, vibrant, and smart with the ball, created havoc in a tired TFC defense...Matty: I think Jay is getting the hang of how to use him...Abram: Perfectly used sub. Running at a young, tired defense...Brendan: Give me more Fernando. He's only the one that has that quick deceptive touch he can use to put a defender off balance to beat him one on one. He's a nuisance for opposing teams and I like how we employ him off the bench.
