USL PDL Update: CFC Azul Concedes Late Again, Phantoms At Top Of Division

Three more clubs in the Northeast Division of the PDL Eastern Conference opened their seasons this weekend, and Seacoast United secured 4 points from two matches (Friday and Sunday) to take their perch at the top of the table. Here's what went down:

Western Mass. Pioneers 1 - 2 Seacoast United Phantoms

The Phantoms are on a roll after this weekend. A late game rally from the New Hampshire-based club led to 3 points Friday night as they played away against the Western Mass. Pioneers. Seacoast's 2 goals came from James Goodwin and Steve Palumbo, both within a short time span, but only after the Pioneers dominated the match for the initial 70 minutes. Boston Victory SC 0 - 2 Worcester Hydra FC

Arguably the game of the week for this division, the two Massachusetts newcomers squared-off for the first time ever, with Boston hosting their in-state rivals at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy on Saturday night. Despite the match being Victory's much anticipated home opener, the Hydra came to play and took all three points. Both goals were scored by striker Junior Alencar. Read more about the clash here.

GPS Portland Phoenix 2 - 1 Vermont Voltage

Couldn't find a write-up of this one, but the stats tell me that GPS Portland Phoenix won. The Phoenix opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a goal from midfielder Itode Fubara, but Vermont answered just a few minutes later by way of Ognjen Perucica. In the second half, Portland forward Chris Banks scored the deciding goal. Portland now must prepare for their first ever US Open Cup match on Tuesday against the Brooklyn Italians.

CFC Azul 1 - 1 Seacoast United Phantoms

Seacost United struck late once again to take points away from their opposition in their 2nd game in 3 days. CFC Azul opened the scoring first by way of former Revolution forward Ryan Kinne, who has now scored twice in as many games for his home state club. But the Connecticut side gave up a goal in stoppage time, not unlike last week's defeat to Boston Victory, which resulted in both sides taking a point a piece.
