Revolution 1-2 DC United: Player Ratings

Getty Images

After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing a thoroughly average performance, and 6 a decent/capable showing. The final ratings will be averages of individual ratings from Steve Stoehr, Corey Major, Matty Jollie, and Abram Chamberlain. Brendan Schimmel is sitting this week out.

Matt Reis: Average Rating - 7.25 (Steve 7, Corey 8, Matty 7.5, Abram 6.5)

Steve: Steady, consistent, effective. Hung out to dry on both goals...Corey: Again made some huge saves and basically kept us in that game the whole time. Deserved that captain's armband...Matty: Another solid performance, though I felt positioning could have been a little better on winner...Abram: Absolutely nothing he could have done about Chris Pontius's cracker of a goal, even the Santos goal would have been a near impossible save due to the melee in the box.

Chris Tierney: Average Rating - 6.25 (Steve 6, Corey 6, Matty 6.5, Abram 6.5)

Steve: Dangerous free kicks, some bright play, but 60% pass completion rate is unacceptable...Corey: Played okay. I don't recall anything particularly eventful from him. Too bad that free kick didn't go in the 29'...Matty: Becoming quite the free kick specialist. Still gives ball away too much...Abram: Perhaps I'm being too generous due to his free kicks, but he almost scored twice. If only Joe Willis's head wasn't so big we would have had a draw.

A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 6.5 (Steve 6.5, Corey 7, Matty 7.5, Abram 5)

Steve: Usual steady, solid self, but beaten by Josh Wolff of all people on the initial header leading to the final goal...Corey: Steady. Dominant. Smart. Saved DC United from having a dangerous breakaway by coming up to midfield and intercepting when Sene tracked way back and was dispossessed...Matty: A rock at the back. Good decisions, strong challenges. Getting very good in the air...Abram: Soares is surely stepping up as a leader on defense. Excited to see Soares, Joseph, Feilhaber down the middle for future games.

Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 4.875 (Steve 4.5, Corey 5, Matty 6, Abram 4)

Steve: 53% passing and got worked on Pontius' goal. Better defenders would have been beaten, too, but that does not exonerate him...Corey: I might argue that this was his worst game yet. Looked tentative and out of place...Matty: A step back. Not a good performance. With slower speed needs to be more decisive...Abram: Should have done better marking Pontius on the GWG, 15 of 28 passes completed does not exactly instill me with confidence.

Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 6.125 (Steve 6, Corey 6, Matty 6.5, Abram 6)

Steve: Good defensively, except on last goal, but still a liability going forward...Corey: Certainly played better defensively in this one. His attacks are still nothing great and need more work. His shot early in the game was sloppy and occurred after running into Ryan Guy if I remember correctly...Matty: Handled his defensive responsibilities well. Needs to be tidier when going forward...Abram: All over the place. Locked down his evil twin, Nick Deleon. 21 of 27 passes complete, and no real DC chances came from his side of the field.

Lee Nguyen: Average Rating - 6.375 (Steve 7, Corey 7, Matty 7.5, Abram 4)

Steve: Fought through a heavy fever, tallied a secondary assist, nearly scored a goal. Gutsy, inspiring performance, if brief...Corey: Played with a fever. That's dedication. That's leadership. That's why he's cemented his place in the Starting XI. AND he cleared a ball off the line like it was no big deal...Matty: Continues to show his dynamic skills on the field. A goal can't be too far off...Abram: Fairly poor game. Probably should have one-timed his shot which went on target. In fairness, reports post game said he had a 100 degree fever and IV drip before the game to be able to play.

Clyde Simms: Average Rating - 6.375 (Steve 6, Corey 7, Matty 7, Abram 5.5)

Steve: Still steady, but not the best day passing and lost his mark on DeRo for Santos' goal. Still the key possession hub...Corey: Another big day with his concise passing. He also recovered 11 balls, 6 more than anyone else on the Revs. He played admirably against his old team, but it still felt like there was something missing...Matty: More of the same from Simms. Solid, but not spectacular...Abram: for what I've grown to expect from Simms, this one was a letdown. Lost his mark on DeRo for the corner kick that led to Maicon Santos's goal.

Kelyn Rowe: Average Rating - 5.25 (Steve 4.5, Corey 5.5, Matty 6, Abram 5)

Steve: At times bright, mostly wasteful. Still makes glaring, obvious rookie mistakes. Needs to pick his head up with the ball. Not a good performance...Corey: I feel like he was having a poor game and I think he probably should have been subbed out. Took too many shots from distance that soared over the crossbar. Needed to take more time on certain plays, and less time on others. Rookie mistakes were costly...Matty: Growing pains. Needs to settle down on the offensive end...Abram: very average game. Nothing memorable (good or bad) from Rowe.

Ryan Guy: Average Rating - 4.875 (Steve 4, Corey 6, Matty 6, Abram 3.5)

Steve: One or two good crosses, but passing rate was poor and general play wasn't up to snuff...Corey: Didn't have the impact that maybe he should have. Had some not so great delivery. Only 21 out of 39 passes were successful. Not a great game...Matty: Gave the ball away too much and had little to no impact...Abram: First truly out-and-out poor performance from Guy. Didn't do much with the possession he had. Lost a lot of balls, was often times losing the ball all over the pitch.

Saer Sene: Average Rating - 5.375 (Steve 5, Corey 6.5, Matty 6.5, Abram 3.5)

Steve: Cross for the goal was exquisite, but really needed to score on one of those headers. Profligacy before goal too costly...Corey: Was a bit selfish at times. Still, those headers of his are clearly very dangerous. Nice to know that he can provide some quality service from out on the wing. Want to see him take more shots though, and generally be more involved...Matty: Great ball on the goal. Good pace, still disappearing at times...Abram: Great cross at the beginning made me think I was in for another big game from Sene. A few headers on goal, and a blown chance to head one in where he chose to go for power with his feet, led to his worst game as a Rev.

Jose Moreno: Average Rating - 6.5 (Steve 6, Corey 7, Matty 7.5, Abram 5.5)

Steve: Well-taken goal, several dangerous runs, but definitely needs more time with his new teammates...Corey: GREAT debut from the big guy. Was much quicker than I expected him to be. Seemed to be a nuisance for the DC defense. Had some pretty good delivery. That bicycle kick attempt was costly for us though. Still need to get him on the same page as everyone else it seems...Matty: Much quicker than expected, very strong, good vision. Calling him Moreno now...Abram: excellent goal, nice hold up play, but disappeared for large portions of the game. Seemed half-dead when subbed off.

Benny Feilhaber (sub): Average Rating - 5.625 (Steve 5.5, Corey 6.5, Matty 6, Abram 4.5)

Steve: Immediate catalyst, looked hungry and played some very incisive passes, but picked up a silly yellow...Corey: Nice to see him get some playing time. His injury didn't seem to bother him, which is encouraging. Was pivotal in a couple good attacks. Unfortunately, wasn't a difference maker, however. Hopefully he'll be starting against NY...Matty: Needed him to get back on the field, touch was there too...Abram: A pretty unspectacular re-debut. Had a few good thru balls, some nice defensive work, but didn't unlock the game as I expected.

Fernando Cardenas (sub): Average Rating - N/A

Not enough time to make an impact.

Bjorn Runstrom (sub): Average Rating - N/A
