After every match this season, the staff here at The Bent Musket will be putting together our own player ratings. Ratings are on a 1-10 scale, with 5 representing an average performance, and 6 representing a decent showing. The final rating will be an average of the ratings from Steve Stoehr, Abram Chamberlain, Matty Jollie, and Corey Major.
Matt Reis: Average Rating - 6.875 (Steve 6, Matty 8.5, Abram 5, Corey 7)
Steve: Couldn't do much on the Wondo goal, little to do otherwise, but was quick off his line when needed...Matty: Couldn't do anything on the goal and wasn't tested at all otherwise...Corey: for only letting one goal by... wasn't exactly tested very much...Abram: There was not much that Reis could have done about the lone goal. He looked to lose confidence in his team "playing out of the back" choosing to punt the ball ¾ of the pitch any opportunity he got.
Kevin Alston: Average Rating - 4.625 (Steve 3.5, Matty 7.5, Abram 5.5, Corey 2)
Steve: Used speed to cover defensive lapses, but offered little going forward...Matty: Still thinks he's an offensive threat. Pleased with effort...Abram: Despite some poor plays, Alston stuck with both Wondo and Lenhart all night. Some great defensive work at points to prevent a second SJ goal...Corey: Did not play well at all...weak link in the defense and the team in general
John Lozano: Average Rating - 6.125 (Steve 7, Matty 7.5, Abram 5, Corey 5)
Steve: Tall and strong with a bit of a mean streak, dealt with Lenhart well...Matty: Strong play, tough kid...Abram: Looks to be a solid MLS center back; however, he did allow Lenhart to get in his head -though so did I and I wasn't playing against him- to earn a pretty foolish (albeit worthwhile) yellow card...Corey: he did nothing spectacular as far as I can remember
Stephen McCarthy: Average Rating - 6.375 (Steve 7.5, Matty 7.5, Abram 5, Corey 5.5)
Steve: Surprised the hell out of me, assured in the tackle and good distribution, looked like a natural...Matty: Much better than I expected. Need to cut back on the long, thumping balls...Abram: As a fill-in CB, McCarthy acquitted himself well if not spectacularly...Corey: he put in another fine performance at CB, still doesn't make him the preferred option there
A.J. Soares: Average Rating - 5 (Steve 4, Matty 7, Abram 3, Corey 6)
Steve: Defended reasonably well but is not a left-back and looked out of his element. Injury didn't help...Matty: Out of position. Tall order to ask him to play LB...Abram: Not a whole lot of time for Soares, played out of position, looked relatively lost on the attack. Not an impressive season debut...Corey: I don't know why he was starting at LB but it never seemed comfortable
Kelyn Rowe: Average Rating - 5.25 (Steve 5, Matty 7, Abram 4, Corey 5)
Steve: Didn't do much but also didn't make many mistakes. Decent debut...Matty: Not a bad debut. Got pushed around a bit and surprised by speed of game...Abram: This was his first regular season game for the Revs, and his first game without a goal or an assist. He set the bar high for himself in the preseason, but though he still looked promising he was really forgettable at times...Corey: Homeboy was shut down most of the night...didn't get a lot of room or opportunity to do anything...was hoping for more
Clyde Simms: Average Rating - 5.5 (Steve 5.5, Matty 8, Abram 3, Corey 5.5)
Steve: Didn't make any mistakes and got the job done, but could have done a little more to help maintain possession...Matty: Best MF by far. Calming influence. Dirty work...Abram: Simms was supposed to be a destroyer, but SJ held possession without him destroying very much...Corey: didn't see much out of him...seemed to do a fine job at defensive duties but average on the whole
Shalrie Joseph: Average Rating - 4.25 (Steve 3, Matty 6.5, Abram 3, Corey 4.5)
Steve: Fully responsible for the goal and never looked comfortable afterwards, not what we expect from the captain...Matty: Looked old, out of sorts, and I was really unhappy with his play...Abram: Shalrie didn't do much of anything and looked very listless throughout. Late in the game he had a great opportunity to equalize, but didn't even take a shot. It was also Shalrie's giveaway to Salinas in the midfield that led to the game's sole goal...Corey: giveaways, sloppy passing, etc...Shalrie didn't play like the MLS all-star we're used to
Benny Feilhaber: Average Rating - 7.125 (Steve 7, Matty 7, Abram 6.5, Corey 8)
Steve: Crisp passing and good moves, nearly scored on several occasions, but needed more help from the supporting cast...Matty: Danced all night, uninspired. Save for the late strike, invisible...Abram: Defensively, Feilhaber looked better that I've seen him look. Probably should have scored the game-drawing goal and also set up a clear chance for Shalrie. Seemed to be doing a lot...Corey: played like a leader... tried to make a lot of things happen... was more effective than all of our forwards
Blake Brettschneider: Average Rating - 4 (Steve 4, Matty 5, Abram 2.5, Corey 4.5)
Steve: Put decent pressure on defenders but had poor touches, totally fluffed a glorious chance late...Matty: Not one positive note. Whiffed on a huge chance...Abram: Didn't see a whole lot of the ball, but did completely flub a clear chance towards the end of the game...Corey: Saw little to nothing from him...disappointing
Fernando Cardenas: Average Rating - 5.125 (Steve 4.5, Matty 6.5, Abram 4, Corey 5.5)
Steve: Didn't do much positive but had great energy, should be dynamic going forward...Matty: All energy, no patience or substance...Abram: Great work rate from Cardenas. However, he was caught offside a few too many times. In addition, he wore down late before he was taken off...Corey: Showed some heart and some hustle but ultimately ineffective
Tyler Polak (sub): Average Rating - 5.375 (Steve 5, Matty 7, Abram 4.5, Corey 5)
Steve: Had his moments on the left, put in one dangerous weak-footed cross...Matty: You know what, not nearly as bad as it could have been. Better going forward...Abram: It was a decent debut for Polak, nothing special, but did not look overwhelmed either...Corey: Didn't really change much
Lee Nguyen (sub): Average Rating - 7.25 (Steve 7.5, Matty 7.5, Abram 6.5, Corey 7.5)
Steve: Made an instant impact, nearly created a goal and was the most dangerous player on the pitch...Matty: Smart, quick, incisive. Thought he was going to create a goal...Abram: The goal scoring chances that weren't coming from Feilhaber came from Nguyen. I wouldn't be shocked if he started next week...Corey: instant game-changer...showed some real class on the ball...was the bright spot in the Revs' attack in the 2nd half
Ryan Guy (sub): Average Rating - N/A
Steve: Looked dangerous, but not enough time to make a fair assessment...Matty: N/A...Abram: Guy had a pretty unmemorable performance in only 11 or so minutes of play...Corey: Didn't do enough to make any impact
