Twitter has tipped us off that multiple sources (2) are linking Portuguese defender José Gonçalves to the New England Revolution. Gonçalves, a 27-year-old center-back and left-sided defender, currently plays for FC Sion in the Swiss Super League.
Today's "rumor mill" column on Scotsman.com states that the player is "close to agreeing" to a deal with the Revs, while an article on LeMatin.ch appears to corroborate this claim.
Gonçalves has a smorgasbord of European experience including, most notably, a very successful few years with Heart Of Midlothian FC in the Scottish Premier League between 2006 and 2010. Other European sides that he's played for include FC Basel, also in the Swiss Super League, and FC Nuremberg in the German Bundesliga.
Needless to say, Gonçalves would immediately reinforce the Revolution back-line with a sorely needed veteran center-back to help cultivate the still young trio of A.J. Soares, Stephen McCarthy, and Darrius Barnes. It would stand to reason that he would slot into the starting XI, leaving Soares and McCarthy to compete for the remaining spot.
We can't find any further information right now, but stay tuned for future updates as we catch wind of them. Also thanks to @DeepInTheFort on twitter for initially tipping us off.
